Sungai Rengit is a little seaside town in Pengerang, Johor famous for......? You guessed it, lobster!
Little Sungai Rengit is dotted with seafood restaurants, all offering the town's famed, fresh caught lobsters plus the usual fish, prawns and crabs.
We were in Sungai Rengit for lunch on a Thursday. We circled the entire town a couple of rounds in search of seafood restaurants - each round took less than 5 minutes by car.
We found most of the restaurants rather quiet on a weekday at noon except for Jade Garden and Hyann. We settled for Jade Garden and will be back to try out the rest, next time.
Jade Garden is the largest, most famous and popular of the seafood restaurants in Sungai Rengit.
Live lobster pricing is, of course, seasonal. Right now, medium live lobsters go for RM100/kg, large RM120/kg, extra large RM140/kg, and something called "Big Colour Lobster" RM190/kg.
We ordered 1 kg of medium lobsters and asked for it to be cooked in the "Jade Special Lobster with Gravy" style.
We ordered just the token, obligatory carbs and greens, as we were here for the lobster!
The lobsters met our expectations which were set pretty high - they were simply delicious.
Medium size is actually quite small here J
The flesh came off the shell easily, and it was naturally sweet with just the right balance of tenderness and firmness. The savoury, rich buttery gravy (called "superior broth" 上湯 here) enhanced the flavour of the lobster flesh.
Personally, Sungai Rengit, Pengerang is worth the occasional hour plus drive for a change of scene to have good live lobster in a laid back, small seaside town. I'll be back to try the lobsters in the other restaurants.
