招牌猪手 Pork Trotter @ Eng Kee 淡杯老荣记 in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah, Skudai, Johor

I love pork trotters 猪手 whether it is braised, stewed, roasted, baked or fried like German style Schweinshaxe pork knuckles. So, when I heard about 淡杯老荣记 Eng Kee's signature fried pork trotter 招牌猪手, I couldn't wait to try it.

Eng Kee's stewed trotter was personally prepared by the lady boss and it had the essence of over thirty years of experience and expertise put into making it.

When an order is received the boss' son will deep fry the stewed pork trotter.

Then, fries the buns and makes the savoury gravy.

Eng Kee 淡杯老荣记 signature pork trotter is ready.

Eng Kee's signature pork trotter tasted great!

Never mind that Eng Kee is located in an industrial area passed its prime and now littered with abandoned shops, untidy car repair workshops and store houses.

The golden brown pork trotter was crispy on the outside, yet it was also moist inside due to the little remaining fat and gelatinous tendons kept intact. The golden orange, savoury gravy had a nice balance of salty and sweet flavours with delicate tangy notes.

I love it that in Johor Bahru, two persons can enjoy a top grade fried pork trotter in savoury gravy for a grand total of RM20 J.

Besides their popular pork trotters 招牌猪手, Eng Kee 淡杯老荣记's other signature dishes is their KL Hokkien Mee.

Eng Kee 淡杯老荣记 is one place to impress your friends that you are in the know about Johor food - by finding delicious food even in the most unlikely corners of JB J.

KL Hokkien Mee @ Eng Kee 淡杯老荣记 in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah, Skudai, Johor

Eng Kee 淡杯老荣记 started in Tampoi 淡杯 more than 40 years ago in 1970 and became famous for its KL Hokkien mee 福建面 and signature braised pork trotters 招牌猪手.

About 20 years ago, Eng Kee moved into its present premises in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah, Skudai.

In the 90s and upto to 10 years ago, the industrial area where Eng Kee is now located, was a thriving industrial zone. Today, many of the factories have closed, leaving just some car repair shops, sundry wholesalers, and warehouses. The once large customer base in the area has dwindled. Yet, Eng Kee still serves its regular clientele and faithful fans. People who knows their JB food, still find their way to JB's rust belt.

Eng Kee is now run by the 2nd generation but one thing that sets Eng Kee apart still has not changed. Eng Kee still makes their own yellow noodles, on the upper level of the restaurant.

These are the famous Eng Kee self made yellow noodles.

Helming the shop in Jalan Shahbandar is the founder's 2nd son. The elder son runs another branch at Jalan Pahlawan 2 across the Skudai highway, known as Tan Kee 陈记.

Piping hot KL Hokkien mee ready to serve.

The succulent, al dente yellow noodles with flavourful sauce and lard seared by high heat.

Comparing it with the benchmark KL Hokkien Mee at KL Petaling Street's Kim Lian Kee, Eng Kee's version is more drippy with sauce, sweeter, less salty, and less loaded with lard. Eng Kee's felt smoother as it has more sauce while Kim Lian's felt tacky as it is drier. I like both versions of KL Hokkien Mee but is biased in favour of Eng Kee's as I like my noodles with a little more sauce and I have a milder palate.

Ok... ok..., I can picture the KL Hokkien Mee aficionados wringing their hands and I can hear them howling in protest.

I like Eng Kee's KL Hokkien mee and will be going back to try their signature braised pork trotters :)
