Cakes in Johor Bahru at Niniq Bistro and Bakery

Rachel from Niniq Bistro and Bakery invited me to visit their outlet at Taman Setia Tropika. (Niniq's first outlet is at Taman Pelangi which opened in 2002.)

Cakes-Johor-Bahru-Niniq

Inside Niniq Bistro and Bakery at Setia Tropika, the décor is simple yet elegant. The wood and marble furniture are heavy and of classic design - the type seen in well appointed Indonesian homes. The comfortable environment is very clean and air conditioned.

Niniq's owner Angela's mum is from Surabaya, Indonesia and hence we can see many Indonesian touches in the bistro.

The name Niniq comes from the word ninik, the endearing Indonesian term for "little girl".

As Christmas Day was around the corner, Christmas trees and Yuletide decorations were up in Niniq along with heart warming Christmas songs about winter and snow playing softly in the background.

Cakes-Johor-Bahru-Niniq

This is the café at the ground floor level. There is a second level which is for private parties hosted at Niniq.

Cakes-Johor-Bahru-Niniq

At Niniq, they pay attention to even the small details like the menu cover. The custom hand carved wood inlays on the menu cover is a nice, elegant touch.

In this post, we shall focus on Niniq's popular cakes. We had just tasted Niniq's Christmas turkey in the morning, so we only had stomach space for cakes and coffee. Which was great because we enjoyed chatting with Angela for over 2 hours :D (Niniq also serves Indonesian dishes which I look forward to coming back for).

Cakes-Johor-Bahru-Niniq
Chocolate Decadence RM6.20

This is Niniq's top selling cake, their unique CCTV. Niniq actually named it Chocolate Decadence but customers called it CCTV because of the way it looked, and the name stuck. Deep rich chocolate mousse on a spongy base to indulge the decadent in you :P

Cakes-Johor-Bahru-Niniq
Durian Strudel RM6.40

This is a Must Try - Niniq's durian strudel using Angela's mum's recipe. Made with fresh D24 durians with no preservatives.

Cakes-Johor-Bahru-Niniq

Creamy chilled fresh D24 durian between fluffy flaky crispy crust sprinkled with fine sugar crystals. Just RM6.40 for a little bit of durian and strudel heaven.

Cakes-Johor-Bahru-Niniq
L'opera RM5.80

I love this L'opera because I like foods with a mix of flavours and textures. Niniq's L'opera is a blend of sweet-bitter flavour with interesting mouth feel of fluffy sponge, creamy chocolate and nutty almond bits.

Cakes-Johor-Bahru-Niniq
American Apple Pie RM6.80

My friends know how much I love apple pies, especially freshly baked ones with buttery crust and chunky cut apples :D

Cakes-Johor-Bahru-Niniq
Matcha Indulgence RM6.80

For matcha (Japanese green tea) lovers.

The following are other almost too-beautiful-to-eat cakes at Niniq :D It's always a struggle admiring how lovely the cakes look and chomping down on them to enjoy the inviting taste.

Niniq's famous tiramisu which I didn't taste because I have no more stomach space. Will come back for this.

Cakes-Johor-Bahru-Niniq

Smile inducing cupcakes - just looking at these cupcakes makes me happy :D

Niniq has a good range of coffees, teas and juices to complement their cakes.

Coffee-Cakes-Johor-Bahru-Niniq

My usual order of cappuccino.

This is the interesting tasting Niniq Earl Grey Tea Latte (RM8.80). Earl Grey Tea lovers, give this aromatic latte a try :D

Niniq Bistro and Bakery is a nice place to enjoy excellent cakes, good coffee and tea at reasonable prices. Niniq also serves Indonesian dishes which I must come back for :D

Johor Best Cakes - The Sugar Pantry in Permas Jaya, JB

Johor-Best-Cakes-Sugar-Pantry

Good words about Sugar Pantry in Permas Mall (near JUSCO Permas) has been spreading fast, though the cake shop is less than a year old. I visited Sugar Pantry at the invitation of the owners, Heng and Yen.

Restaurant: The Sugar Pantry
Address: G-03, Blk B, Permas Mall, 03 Jalan Permas Utara, Permas Jaya, Johor Bahru
Map: http://goo.gl/maps/riT6h
GPS: 1.497335,103.817393
Hours: 12:00 noon to 10:00pm
Non Halal

Sugar pantry is a small, simply laid out shop. Air conditioned, bright, very clean and neat. The decor is minimalist yet cosy. It has a few very inviting, dark blue velvet high back arm chairs which I forgot to take photos of :P

Johor-Cakes-Sugar-Pantry

Sugar pantry is like a cake showroom. Their cakes are very appealing visually. You could tell they are premium cakes just by looking at their vibrant colours, carefully sculpted designs and the pride in displaying them in the best light. Clearly a lot of heart and soul as well as hard work have gone into creating these works of art. The best thing is, Sugar Pantry's premium cakes are also reasonably priced.

Johor-Best-Cakes-Sugar-PantryJohor-Best-Cakes-Sugar-Pantry

Yen is the artist behind these works of art. Yen is a Le Cordon Bleu Paris trained pastry chef.

Johor-Best-Cakes-Sugar-Pantry

She was the chef in charge of Les Amis' pastry section and a partner in Pavé Chocolates and Confections in Katong (Singapore) before returning to JB to open Sugar Pantry with her husband Heng.

To me, sugar pantry is like a jewelry shop with beautiful handcrafted trinkets on display. The owner is like an artist making the pieces of art. Only difference is Sugar Pantry's artwork is edible, wrong, they are delicious. The thing is, they look so beautiful I did feel a tinge of heartache when I stabbed the cake with my fork.

Yen takes great pride in her cakes. Everything is made at the shop from scratch even the Blueberry and Strawberry jam. This is possible only when there is passion.

Johor-Best-Cakes-Sugar-Pantry-Permas-Jaya

Yen uses only natural ingredients like their vanilla which she makes from vanilla pods from Madagascar.

We tried a few of Yen's cakes. They were just the right sweetness and not sugary.

I love tea scones, that quintessentially English pastry because I like the blend of sweet homemade jam and savoury butter flavours as well as the warmness and soft graininess of the pastry.

Éclair au Confiture de Fraise. Don't worry, that whipped cream has body without being heavy and greasy.

Johor-Best-Cakes-Sugar-Pantry

Yen is proud of this Nutty Putty (RM11.90) made with milk chocolate and coconut topped with peanut.

Miso, Blueberry and Matcha flavoured macaroons. Yen is a big macaroon fan. She used to eat macaroons for her main meal when she was in Le Cordon Bleu Paris.

We have no more stomach space left to try the following but take a look at Yen's art. Don't they look like jewels?

I always love a robust Cappuccino with my sweet cakes.

Johor-Best-Cakes-The-Sugar-Pantry

Sugar Pantry also serves fresh juices and cocktails to go with their cakes. This one named Kiwi Bird and Pandan Bear (RM11.90) is made with Kiwi fruit, lime, Pandan syrup and fizzy (no alcohol).

The Sugar Pantry is a nice place to chill out with good cakes and coffee.

Johor Best Cakes - Patisserie Love Café and Bakery in Bukit Indah, Johor Bahru

Patisserie-Love-Café-Bakery-Bukit-Indah-Johor-Bahru

I love chilling out with friends over a nice hot cappa coffee and cool cakes in air con comfort, away from our tropical heat and humidity.

Passionfood Cafe in Taman Pelangi is one of my favourite places in Johor Bahru to enjoy coffee and cakes. So I am happy when Chi Ling (Passionfood's boss) told me that she has opened a Passionfood sister cafe in Bukit Indah known as Patisserie Love. Yesterday, I was at Patisserie Love at Chi Ling's invitation.

Patisserie-Love-Cafe-Bakery-Bukit-Indah-Johor-Bahru

I like Patisserie Love/ Passionfood for their thoughtfulness.

Patisserie-Love-Cafe-Bakery-Bukit-Indah-Johor-Bahru

The set up at Patisserie Love is simple and nice - it makes me feel relaxed and comfortable the moment I stepped in. Nothing pretentious. Just inviting and easy going.

The cakes are the same as at Passionfood as they are made at the same Passionfood bakery. For Passionfood fans, quality and consistency are assured.

Chi Ling, Tyng and I shared the following cakes.

Patisserie-Love-Cafe-Bakery-Bukit-Indah-Johor-Bahru
Green Tea Tiramisu RM8.50
