GIANT Caterers (Halal Indian Food) in Plentong, Johor Bahru

GIANT-Caterers-Johor-Bahru

Many people in Johor would be familiar with the famous GIANT Caterers but maybe not so many people know about Restoran GIANT Caterers.

GIANT-Caterers-Johor-Bahru

Thanks to link up through makan kaki Kumes, we were hosted to a banana leaf lunch today by Yokitha Naidu, the Director of GIANT Caterers. GIANT Caterer actually has a simple restaurant at the same premises where they prepare their famous catered meals. We had our lunch at the nice air con section with large round tables for eat togethers.

The layout of GIANT Caterers restaurant and the arrangements are very simple. Customers just point out to the staff the food that they want from the many choices laid out in the lines of food warmers.

The price is then totalled up based on the price list displayed prominently on the wall. A very good meal of rice, meat and vegetables can be had for about RM6 per person.

GIANT-Caterer-Johor-Bahru

The best way to enjoy Indian food is to mix the rice, curries and dishes, and eat it using our fingers. The second best way is to use fork and spoon, and I was the only one doing so today as I had to take photographs. Food bloggers are such a long suffering bunch, in case you are not aware :P

We had a sampling of some of the dishes served at GIANT Caterers.

I love sambal deep fried eggs.

Curry-Crabs-Johor-Bahru

I am normally not a fan of flower crabs but this was so good, we asked for a second helping.

Crabs-Johor-Bahru

No much meat in the slender claws but the flesh in the body was sweet and meaty.

Overall, the dishes were delicious. Though most of the dishes looked fiery, they were not overly spicy hot. The spices were gentle on our taste buds but very indulgent towards our noses, entertaining it with pleasant fragrances.

Papadum-Johor-Bahru

No Indian meal would be complete for me without at least a couple of dry, crispy, crackly papadums. These were very nicely done here and not the greasy, limp kind I sometimes encounter at other Indian restaurants.

Moorgh-Johor-Bahru

I tried this cold yogurt drink known as moor ais. It was savoury and slightly sourish. The drink tasted almost like a soup.

Masala-Tea-Johor-Bahru

Masala-Tea-Johor-Bahru

We topped off our sumptuous banana leaf lunch with hot masala tea.

Kumes demonstrating how to tarik teh, almost successfully.

Restoran GIANT Caterers is a good place to enjoy authentic Indian food at reasonable prices. It's a good opportunity to sample GIANT Caterers' food, if you are thinking of holding a large event. I want to come back to Restoran GIANT Caterers for their Clay Pot Hydrabadi Dum Beriani which is available only on Sundays.

Closed - Nasi Briyani at Jitterbug Café in Plentong (near Tesco Extra Hypermart), Johor Bahru

Nasi-Briyani-Johor

Sharifah, the owner of Jitterbug Café was excited to have us try her family's nasi briyani made with a recipe passed down from her grand dad.

Heritage-Photo

Sharifah's grand dad (second row, middle) was a police officer and was passionate about cooking. This nasi briyani is available only on Sundays as Sharifah's dad, Enché Said, who learnt how to cook briyani from his own dad, personally makes it.

Nasi-Briyani-Johor

Enché Said who is an executive in the oil and gas industry had been passionate about cooking for as long as he could remember.  Enché Said learnt the recipe for this nasi briyani from his dad as a child and together they had been making this briyani for family gatherings and weddings for many years. After much persuasion from family and friends, Enché Said decided to add the family heirloom nasi briyani to the menu of Sharifah's Café, but only on Sundays as he has his own business. (Enché Said will serve his nasi bryani on other days if there is a special order for at least ten persons.)

Nasi-Briyani-Johor

Jitterbug's nasi bryani is special in that Enché Said uses only fresh vegetables and nuts like chilies, tomatoes, ginger, almonds, turmeric, lemon grass and garlic to make it. The only dry or powdered spice used is just a little white pepper. So, the aroma and flavours of Jitterbug's briyani are mild, refreshing and leave no aftertaste on the taste buds.

Nasi-Briyani-Johor

The fluffy Basmati rice had the distinctive taste and fragrance of QBB brand ghee and saffron which I liked. The ghee was just lightly enveloping the long rice grains and not overly greasy.

Nasi Briyani

The mutton was blanketed in gravy that was mild and deliciously flavourful. The gravy was pleasant and gentle on the taste buds and olfactory nerves (sense of smell).

Nasi-Briyani-Johor

Inside, the mutton was tender and moist, with the smokey mutton flavour highlighted by the mild delicate gravy (unlike the average mutton briyani where pungent and stinging spicy gravies tend to overwhelm the natural mutton flavours).

At RM26 nett per serving, Jitterbug's nasi briyani is undoubtedly set at premium pricing. Sharifah said that the premium fresh ingredients used account for the premium pricing.

Jitterbug-Cafe-Johor

There is good news for Johor Kaki readers :) When you order Jitterbug's nasi briyani, just mention "Johor Kaki" to the staff, and you will be given a long glass of Jitterbug's minty, tangy, sweet house drink Hocus Pocus on the house i.e. briyani plus Hocus Pocus drink at RM26 nett. (Hocus Pocus is normally sold at RM9.)

Jitterbug Café is very much a family affair. Dad whips up his speciality nasi briyani and mum too has something for Jitterbug's customers - it's the family's Nasi Ayam Masak Panggang.

Nasi-Ayam-Johor

This chicken is served with fragrant white rice and you can also ask for it to be served with briyani rice.

Nasi-Ayam-Johor

The large piece of chicken leg was lightly fried and then cooked with the similar gravy as Jitterbug's mutton briyani. This chicken is a good alternative for those who prefer chicken over mutton.

Nasi-Ayam

I especially enjoyed the accompanying fried vegetables. Refreshingly fragrant, crunchy, juicy with delicate natural sweetness and savouriness from the bits of fried anchovies.

Nasi-Ayam-Masak-Panggang

It love eggs cooked in chili and spices. This was one of the best chili eggs that I have tasted - fresh, tender and flavourful.

The Nasi Ayam Masak Panggang costs RM22 and you also get the Hocus Pocus house drink at no additional charge by just mentioning "Johor Kaki" to the staff. This chicken dish is available daily as mum is at the café everyday.

Desserts=Johor

To round off our lunch, we had Ferrero Rocher and banana pancake with maple syrup at RM14.90. I enjoyed it though I don't really have a sweet tooth while the ladies raved about it.

Fruit-Juice-Johor

Jitterbug has a wide range of fresh juices - this was the orange and dragon fruit mix.

Sharifah positioned Jitterbug as a "boutique café" where people come to chill and enjoy premium quality food in a hip, cool and serene ambiance.

Jitterbug-Johor

This was our second visit to Jitterbug Café. We tried Jitterbug's innovative Western food menu during our first visit last year.

Getting to Jitterbug Café from downtown JB or CIQ is a breeze with the EDL (Eastern Dispersal Link). Just 15 minutes driving, toll free! :)

Remember to mention "Johor Kaki" to the staff to claim your free Hocus Pocus house drink with your nasi briyani or nasi ayam masak panggang.

Closed - Western Food at Jitterbug Café in Plentong, Masai near Tesco Extra in Johor Bahru, Malaysia

I received an email from Sharifah Mun, the owner of Jitterbug Café to visit her newly opened restaurant in Plentong, Johor Bahru. Checking out Jitterbug's Facebook page, I was excited to visit the hip looking restaurant and try the dishes in their interesting menu.

Jitterbug is run by Sharifah supported by her staff and Chef Chin.

Sharifah let me try a few of Jitterbug's popular dishes.

Sharifah started us off with Jitterbug's mushroom soup. Well, mushroom soups made with fresh mushroom are fairly common in good mid price restaurants but at Jitterbug, the soup had a certain body and taste that set it apart. Chef Chin added barley in the mushroom soup which gave it a refreshing, sweet twist that blended well with the fresh mushrooms. We liked it.

Sharifah was eager to let us try Jitterbug's Ugly Duckling (RM22). Jitterbug's Ugly Duckling was anything but ugly. Between the nice buns were slices of tender juicy savoury lean smoked duck. The orange juice in the sauce and the slice of fresh green apple made this burger a stand out for me. This is my favourite dish of the day :)

Pardon me as I indulge in another picture of Jitterbug's delectable, beautiful Ugly Duckling. A Must Try, definitely.

Meet Johnny Bravo, Jitterbug's version of Beef Sliders (RM25.90). The beef burger made with a thick chunky piece of fresh beef patty. Pleasant beefy flavour and not overly salty which is a common fault of average beef burgers. Jitterbug's Johnny Bravo was likable and similar to beef burgers of better mid price restaurants. Johnny Bravo is a good choice for people who like meaty beef.

I love Jitterbug's chicken chop (RM27). The chicken was crispy outside. Inside it was tender and juicy. The chicken chop was drenched with a gravy that was savoury and had a refreshing, subtly tangy twist. The pieces of chicken were drippy and redolent with generous amount of subtly perky gravy. My friends know my preference for drippy gravy. I recommend this chicken chop, if you are looking for a satisfying, tasty meal.

We had Truffle Fries (RM16) to go along with our meal. It's regular French fries drizzled with truffle oil to give it that subtle earthly aroma associated with truffles. Trendy and a minor craze in Singapore now. Personally, I am not a big fan of fries and truffles didn't change that for me :P

After our meal, Jitterbug had a good stock of fresh fruits for freshly squeezed and blended fruit juices to wash it all down.

Jitterbug Café is a cool, well appointed place to chill with friends and family over soothing retro music and delicious food.

The walls at Jitterbug are adorned with cool pictures and art work. This picture I thought captures the spirit of Jitterbug well - hip, bold, innovative, energised yet relaxed, and welcoming. Sharifah welcome artists to showcase their work in Jitterbug by calling her at 019-906-3609.

Uncle Tom's Tavern (Western Food) in Plentong, Johor Bahru, Malaysia

Uncle Tom's Special, a whopping, delicous ¼ pounder!

Last night, we went to check out Uncle Tom's Tavern in Plentong (near Tesco Extra) which is probably JB's newest Western food restaurant (opened for business just two months ago) at the invitation of the owners, Tom and Michelle.

We met the warm and friendly Uncle Tom (after which this restaurant was named), and his lovely wife, Michelle.

Michelle shared that this Western food restaurant is dedicated to Uncle Tom, who had been in the oil and gas industry for over thirty years.

At Uncle Tom's Tavern, Michelle would lovingly prepare the food for guests as she would for Uncle Tom, thus bringing new meaning to the phrases "family restaurant" and "home cooked meal".

Michelle is assisted in the kitchen by an able crew and Chef Hernan - here whipping up Uncle Tom's favourite fried rice.

Chef Hernan helps Michelle with the finishing touches to the food before serving.

Let's take a look at what we had :)

If you are a beef and burger lover, be sure to ask for this Uncle Tom's Special. It's a whopping quarter (¼) pound of fresh ground beef. Made with fresh low fat beef, the lean but thick patty was tender and delicious, without the greasiness and saltiness of the usual fast food burgers.

The beef patty was sandwiched between Uncle Tom's homemade buns which were teasingly sweet, soft and nice to the bite. At RM17.90, Uncle Tom's Special quarter pounder was worth every ounce of money. For people with a regular sized appetite, the usual sized Classic burger is available at RM10.90.

Grilled lamb chops nicely sizzled with the outside layer slightly caramelised, while inside, it is still juicy and retaining that distinctive flavour that make lamb lovers swoon. These lamb chops for RM22.90.

As someone who has to watch his cholesterol, this Cajun Salmon was my guilt free favourite of the evening :) Michelle again got the outside nicely seared and the insides still moist and wet with natural juices. Made with fresh salmon fillet, the Cajun spices brought out the delightful flavour and aroma of the tender, oily salmon flesh.

Since this Cajun Salmon (RM14.90) was my favourite, you are treated to extra shots of this :P

I also love this grilled steak (RM32.90). Thick chunky bars of well marinated grilled tenderloin carefully stacked and laid on a bed of fried potato slices and asparagus.

Tender, moist, flavourful, smoky tasting, well done tenderloin steak.

To round up our dinner, we had the Arrabiata Chicken Pasta. Nice al dente pasta tossed in a creamy, tangy, subtly spicy tomato and herb sauce. This large delicious plate of pasta cost RM11.90.

Must really share with you about Uncle Tom's homemade bread and buns. Everyone from our party agreed that Uncle Tom's bread was really special. The bread was a well balanced blend of delicate savoury and sweet notes, and its texture was nicely soft inside with a gentle pleasing bite. You have to try it to know what I mean. Uncle Tom's homemade and baked bread was so good, we took home additional pieces to enjoy :)

To help wash down all the good food, Uncle Tom's Tavern has a well appointed bar, well stocked with a good range of beers, wines and liquor.

Uncle Tom's Tavern will be adding more varieties of drinks served at the bar.

Everyone at the dinner agreed that Uncle Tom's Tavern offers very good Western food with sincere service, at very reasonable prices :)

Uncle Tom's Tavern is easy to get to from Singapore or downtown JB. With the EDL (Eastern Dispersal Link), travel to Plentong is just about 20 minutes from the JB CIQ.
