It is probably safe to say that almost anyone born and bred in Johor Bahru would have heard of Yong Yong dessert stall 荣荣甜品.

Meet Jeff the second generation owner of Yong Yong at Taman Perling. Jeff was working in Singapore as an engineer before returning to Johor Bahru to run Yong Yong together with his wife, Shirley and his father (the founder). Jeff's brother runs the Yong Yong stall at Tepian Tebrau with their mother.

Jeff's dad started Yong Yong at the corner of the now demolished Capitol Cinema in old downtown JB. He then ran a push cart stall at the beach along Stulang Laut in the 1970s that has since become one of the good food that defines the Johor brand.

Ice Kacang RM4

This ice kacang is Yong Yong's original claim to fame. Yong Yong's signature ice kacang is made with fine, soft ice shavings topped with boiled maize, red beans and chocolate syrup. As the ice is fine and soft, the chocolate syrup penetrates the ice mound quickly, saturating it with chocolaty flavour.

Yong-Yong-Dessert-荣荣甜品-Taman-Perling

The soft ice mound melts pretty fast, revealing the treasures below like attap seeds and grass jelly. The best way to enjoy this watery icy concoction is with the drinking straw provided.

Yong-Yong-Dessert-荣荣甜品
Ice Jelly RM4.50

Ice Jelly is shaved ice doused with a sugary syrup and topped with sea coconut, sour sop, jelly and fruit cocktail.

Yong-Yong-Dessert-荣荣甜品

A squeeze of lime gives the jelly and ice a slightly sourish taste. Ice jelly is a refreshing cold dessert for hot afternoons.

Yong-Yong-Dessert-Restaurant-荣荣甜品

Tau suan 豆爽 is one of my favourite hot desserts. I used to eat a mee rebus and tau suan combination for lunch everyday at the office years ago.

Yong-Yong-Dessert-Restaurant-荣荣甜品

Yong Yong's tau suan is just perfect for me. The mung beans have the right texture and bite (neither too hard nor too mushy), the starch is the right thickness and stickiness, and it's just the right sweetness.

Yong-Yong-Dessert-荣荣甜品
Tauhu Bakar RM3.00

Yong Yong's tauhu baker or grilled bean curd. Look at the lovely glint on the sauce's surface.

Yong-Yong-Dessert-荣荣甜品

The grill bean curd is stuffed with shredded cucumber and crunchy boiled bean sprouts.

Yong-Yong-Dessert-荣荣甜品-Taman-Perling

Every order of tauhu bakar and it's sauce is made on the spot.

Yong-Yong-Dessert-Restaurant-荣荣甜品

Jeff ladling in the marvellous sauce on the tauhu bakar. The sauce is savoury, nutty, with subtle hints of spiciness and not overly salty.

Yong-Yong-Dessert-荣荣甜品

Yong Yong's savoury sauce is a blend of chili, crushed ground nuts, prawn paste, sugar and other condiments. You can have the sauce to suit your taste just by informing Jeff.

Yong-Yong-Dessert-荣荣甜品

Yong Yong's rojak is one of the best around. The cucumber, pumpkin, and pineapple slices are fresh and juicy without them feeling damp. The salad is tossed in the same savoury sauce made on the spot for the tauhu bakar.

Yong Yong in Taman Perling and also in Tepian Tebrau is a "must try" if you are looking for old school desserts in Johor Bahru.

Red Rice Wine Mee Suah and Wanton Mee at Restoran Lima Ratus in Taman Perling, Johor Bahru

Today, I had a great day with my friend Jo-Hann who showed me the food he grew up with in Taman Perling.

We had red rice wine mee suah, wanton mee and shrimp dumplings, the most popular items in Restoran Lima Ratus.

Wanton-Mee-Johor

Restoran Lima Ratus is a humble shop in Taman Perling run by MR Low and his wife with an elderly helper. And, MR Low had been a noodle seller since the Japanese Occupation in the 1930s, when he was in his early teens.

Wanton-Mee

Sometimes, MR Low's youngest son helps out at the shop after school. I was told that the boy is already a flying wanton mee maestro. I want to catch him in full flight action soon :))

Red-Rice-Wine-Mee-Suah

Ah..... red rice wine mee suah, that quintessential Foochow comfort food.

Wanton-Mee-Johor

The boss, MR Low, who is over 70 years old is Foochow and had learnt how to make this classic Foochow red rice wine mee suah from his mum. Talk about old school!

Red-Rice-Wine-Mee-Suah

The slender mee suah was smooth and soft yet still retaining a slight bounciness. The mee suah sponged up the vinegar tangy, savoury and slightly alcoholic red rice wine very well. This was so delicious! I am so grateful to Jo-Hann for bringing me to MR Low's shop for this.

Red-Rice-Wine-Mee-Suah

The reddish coloured pieces of tender fresh chicken served with the mee suah were well infused with the distinctive flavours of the red rice wine.

Red-Rice-Wine-Mee-Suah

The red rice wine broth was tangy, sweet, savoury, and loaded with ground and chopped ingredients like onions. With such a complex blend of flavours, it is little wonder that red rice wine mee suah is the favourite of many people. Though a tad oily, the broth was so delicious that I slurped it all up noisily.

MR Low's homemade egg noodles were also very popular.

Wanton-Mee-Johor

I was thrilled to hear that MR Low's self made egg noodles were made with duck eggs - something seldom done nowadays as almost all wanton mee are made with more easily available chicken eggs.

Mee-Pok-Johor

Wanton-Mee-Johor

We had this mee pok and the mee kia. The noodles were crunchy al dente. MR Low's duck egg noodles were also firmer than the usual chicken egg noodles.

Wanton-Mee-Johor

Mee-Pok-Johor

The mee kia and mee pok after a good stirring of the sauce. The sauce was quite subtle and delicate, and unobtrusively complemented the noodles, which were the star of the dish. I was so enthralled with the noodles and engaged in conversation with MR Low that I forgot to pay too much attention to the sauce. Foodies who prefer their noodles to have more sauce, please remember to let MR Low know.

Like the sauce, neither did I busy myself with the char siew, though I did remember that they were pretty tasty.

Shrimp-Dumplings

The wantons and shrimp dumplings were freshly handmade at the shop.

Shrimp-Dumpling

The shrimp dumplings were slurpingly soft and slinky smooth. They could literally slide down one's throat.

Shrimp-Dumplings-Johor

The shrimps inside were fresh and had a bouncy bite. The chopped chestnuts in the dumplings added to the dumplings' crunchiness.

Wanton-Johor

The wantons had the same smooth skin as the shrimp dumplings. The meat were packed quite tight though the wantons were still tender to the bite and had that pleasant sesame aroma.

MR Low is famous for his red rice wine mee suah 红糟鸡面线 and wanton mee. Not many people know that MR Low has a talent for mimicking bird song. MR Low mastered his talent since his teens and has been entertaining his friends and customers. Click on the picture to watch MR Low perform his bird song.

For those who are interested, Lima Ratus is one of those shops in JB that Singapore Media Corp artistes sometimes patronise incognito.

Red-Rice-Wine-Mee-Suah-Johor

MR Low's shop, is in the back row and had a sun bleached signboard, so it is rather inconspicuous. It is best to study the Google map and set your GPS before setting off for Restoran Lima Ratus.

8108 炒小吃 Stall in Kedai Makanan Yenn Sang 源香 in Taman Perling, Johor Bahru, Malaysia

Stumbled upon this little zhe char stall 8108 炒小吃 in Yenn Sang 源香 kopitiam while trying to grab a quick lunch before an appointment in Taman Perling.

What first caught my attention was the bellowing smoke and the sizzling sound of food on a hot wok.

As I turned around and approached, I saw the chef playing with the wok over a stove that was spitting fire. I stopped to watch the chef as I am always fascinated by darting, licking flames, energetic toss frying and the drool triggering sound of sizzle.

Chef and I started a conversation. In the middle of tossing and frying, the chef told me that he and his wife had previously worked in the famous Sin Leong restaurant in Marine Parade, Singapore. After many years, they returned back to Johor Bahru and started 8108 炒小吃.

This is 8108's oil smeared menu held with Scotch tape onto the glass showcase. Hand written with marker pen on yellow vanguard sheet. It's all very casual, practical and unpretentious.

Well, when unsure about what to order, the best thing to do is to ask the chef himself. The chef suggested that I try his kam hiong chicken - the top item on his menu.

I gladly took the chef's recommendation and it was good, of course - it was the chef's personal recommendation after all :P

The fresh chicken chunks were fried in intense heat in savoury, tangy and sweet gravy. The outer layer of the chicken pieces were slightly caramelised by the wok hei (intense radiated heat) while the insides were still moist and juicy.

I wonder where else can I enjoy a delicious hot RM5.50 lunch of substantial portion that was well executed by a former restaurant chef.

This was someone else's sambal squids. I shall try this next time :)

联姐 Yong Tau Foo 酿豆腐 Stall @ Kim Ling 金岭 Kopitiam in Taman Perling, Johor Bahru

联姐 who runs the popular kia teow kia stall at Kim Ling kopitiam in Taman Perling, also runs the yong tau foo 酿豆腐 stall.

联姐's Hakka styled yong tau foo stall serves an extensive range of yong tau foo and fried tofu. Everything at 联姐 is home-made.

The generous fresh fish stuffing in 联姐's yong tau foo pieces were light and sweet. Let's take a look at what's available.

Customers can pick any combination of these yong tau foo pieces and have them served in a savoury blended sauce of sweet, spicy and salty flavours, or in a tasty soup.

This time, I opted for the soup. The popular deep fried tofu skin were still crunchy even after soaking up loads of tasty broth.

The slightly cloudy soup base was made with soy beans, stock bones and anchovies.

I had "mouse" noodles 老鼠粉 for a change.

Kim Ling kopitiam is a convenient spot for group meals as it offers a wide variety of good hawker fare - there is something for everyone. Ample seating, indoors, al fresco and there is also an air conditioned section. 联姐's Yong Tau Foo stall adds to Kim Ling's already wide range of food choices available.
