Kampung Chicken Rice at 旺角 Stall in Kee Kim Huat Kopitiam in Taman Sri Tebrau, Johor Bahru

 Chicken-Rice

We were having late supper a few months ago at Kee Kim Huat kopitiam and one of us ordered a small plate of kampung chicken rice from the 旺角 kampung chicken rice stall here. I immediately liked it as the chicken was tender, smooth and flavourful. I decided then that I would come back to try it again and write a post about it.

Chicken-Rice

旺角 Kampung Chicken Rice stall run by Ah Xiang is a branch of Buddy's chicken rice in Taman Pelangi. Whereas Buddy's sells farm chickens,  旺角 specialises in kampung chickens.

Chicken-Rice

The kampung chicken meat was tender, smooth and naturally sweet. Even the breast meat which is usually bland and fibrous was soft and flavourful.

Chicken-Rice

Whenever a chicken rice stall offers "glass chicken claws" I will order it :) The "glass chicken claws" at 旺角 were excellent - crunchy, and had nice mouth feel. The light savoury and slightly tangy sauce enhanced the taste of the "glass chicken claws".

Fried-Tofu

All of Buddy's outlets get their tofu from the same supplier. The tofu was firm and quite smooth. Ah Xiang is skillful in frying the tofu and his was the most nicely done tofu among Buddy's outlets that I have tried so far.

Chicken-Rice

We had a plate of beansprouts. It was nice and crunchy and was tasty with nice savoury sauce. But, these were the usual local taugeh and it was not as good that those plump, succulent and sweet taugeh we had in Ipoh.

Chicken-Rice

The rice was mildly flavoured with pandan leaves, ginger and chicken fat. It was not too oily nor greasly, not that "old style" some would say but I liked my chicken rice this way.

Chicken-Rice Chili

The spicy, mildy stinging chili sauce and mild ginger puree were nice and enhanced the enjoyment of the chicken.

Chicken-Rice

旺角 sells kampung chicken at RM38 a bird and RM19 for half. A set of chicken rice with soup  costs RM7.

Chicken-Rice

旺角 does not serve porridge despite what is stated on the stall front.

Chicken-Rice

旺角 Chicken Rice stall is certainly worth trying for its lovely kampung chicken.

I noticed at least one other kampung chicken stall just around the corner. I shall try that and other stalls, and compile a selection of JB's best chicken rice.

59 Restoran Fifty Nine Kway Teow Kia and Braised Duck at Kee Kim Huat Kopitiam in Taman Sri Tebrau, Johor Bahru, Malaysia

The kway teow kia and braised duck at 59 Restoran Fifty Nine stall in Kee Kim Huat kopitiam in Taman Sri Tebrau is one of JB's old favourites :)

Ah Hua and his wife have been selling their popular kway teow kia and Teochew braised duck for over forty years.

This hardworking couple still makes one of the best and most popular kway teow kia and braised duck in Johor Bahru.

My plate last night of mixed braised pork offal and braised duck with a bowl of kway teow kia noodles. A little bit of everything.

The dominant flavour of the braised pork offal and braised duck was their natural sweetness brought out and enhanced by the subtly herbal braising sauce. The pork offal were very well cleaned and there were no other smells or tastes other than the fragrant braising sauce and the natural sweet taste of pork and duck.

Ah Hua's braised pork skin was perfectly done - soft yet springy and tasted delicious.

Ah Hua's wife told me that they have a regular customer who would come with his family of four and orders 5 portions of braised pork skin every time. I enjoyed Ah Hua's pork skin myself and found the customer's obsession for it perfectly understandable :P

I especially liked Ah Hua's braised belly pork.

When I chew all the three layers of lean meat, fat and skin together, it created a chewy, smokey yet smooth blend of textures that was at the same time sweet and savoury. The skin in particular had a nice candy like gummy texture which I liked.

Ah Hua and his wife are justifiably proud of their braised duck. The tender duck meat had very little fat and when chewed with that thin sliver of skin became a mushy sweet treat in the mouth.

This little bowl of preserved cabbages was tangy and savoury with subtle spicy hints from the dried chili peppers.

It was neither overly salty nor too soft (which are the common faults with average preserved cabbages).

The crunchy yet spongy tau pok was a nice way to enjoy the tasty braising sauce.

We added a plate of tofu and large intestines. The large intestines were naturally sweet, tender and felt like braised tofu skin.

The soft and porous tofu sponged up the savoury braising sauce making it a delightful treat.

The kway teow kia noodles soaking in piping hot braising sauce. The tasty braising sauce was neither salty nor oily, and was thus highly drinkable.

Everything sold at the stall is home made by Ah Hua and his wife, including this chili sauce. The chili sauce was not overly spicy and it had a smooth, highly agreeable texture.

Crunchy and soft pork ears

Braised skin from pig's head

Other customers' delicious looking orders.

59 Kia Teow Kia stall is a Must Try heritage stall.

Seng Kee Curry Sah Hor Fun 成记咖哩河粉 in Taman Sri Tebrau, Johor Bahru, Malaysia

Curry-Hor-Fun-Johor-Bahru

Seng Kee 成记 is a humble wontan noodles and hor fun stall set inside the popular Kee Kim Huat kopitiam 纪金发茶餐室 in Taman Sri Tebrau. What caught my attention at Seng Kee was their chicken curry sah hor fun 沙河粉, yes, sah hor fun doused in robust chicken curry - uniquely Johor!

Look at Ah Seng's mop of permed hair that belies his creative nature :)

This unique curry sah hor fun 沙河粉 is the boss, Ah Seng's 亞成  creation. Ah Seng who is originally from Ipoh, started as a sah hor fun hawker 39 years ago. One day, years ago, Ah Seng 亞成 experimented with adding curry to his Ipoh sah hor fun and voila, the uniquely delicious curry and sah hor fun fusion was born.

Ah Seng's sah hor fun 沙河粉 are specially made to his exact specifications for his curry fusion

Seng Kee's sah hor fun is broad and thin, and had that fresh rice fragrance.

The hor fun was soaked in chicken curry that was not too spicy, just a slight pleasant sting and a delicate balance of sweetness and savouriness. The sah hor fun sheets absorbed and combined with the curry gravy very well.

The chicken curry combined with the smooth sah hor fun in such a way that brought out both the rice fragrance and spicy aroma. Yummy.

The chunk of curry chicken was sweet and nicely spicy too.

Seng Kee's chicken curry sah hor fun is a unique and tasty light breakfast.

Give Ah Seng's 亞成 curry sah hor fun a try. There may be imitations of this invented in JB dish elsewhere, but nothing beats eating the original curry sah hor fun where it was created and personally prepared by it's creator, Ah Seng 亞成.
