Singapore Prawn Mee in Larkin Bus Station Food Centre, Johor Bahru

Singapore-Prawn-Mee-Johor-Bahru

My friend Bryan (of Food & Fun Johor) and I recently paid a visit to the Ngew Seng Kwi 阿贵 prawn noodles stall at the third storey food centre at JB's Larkin bus station.

Singapore-Prawn-Mee-Johor-Bahru

Ah Kwi's humble stall is one of the oldest prawn mee stalls in Johor.

Ah Kwi's dad used to run his prawn mee stall on a push cart in 1950s Singapore. One day in 1964, Ah Kwi's dad pushed his push cart stall right across the Causeway and settled down along Jalan Wong Ah Fook in Johor Bahru.

This is Ah Kwi in 1971. The stall had neither electricity nor running water. Ah Kwi's prawn mee push cart stall remained in Jalan Wong Ah Fook until they were moved to Larkin in 1995 to make way for JB downtown redevelopment.

Looking at Ah Kwi today, the man hasn't aged that much. Guess his secret for staying youthful is his friendliness and cheerfulness.

For Ah Kwi's stall, I suspect not much has changed since the 1970s except, of course, the location, convenience of electricity and running water, and needless to say, the price.

When I was a child in Singapore's old Toa Payoh lorong 5, we used to buy our prawn mee from the food centre nearby. We would eat the noodles for lunch, and save the soup which we will add rice inside, and that will be our dinner. We were happy because the deep brownish hued, tea like prawn broth was so, so tasty.

Ah Kwi's prawn mee is not quite the Toa Payoh prawn mee of the 1970s but it is probably as close to old style Singapore prawn mee as you can get in JB today.

The main ingredients of Ah Kwi's prawn mee are of course prawns and then there are also thin slices of pork. The pork slices were slightly firm and its flavour was likeable though unremarkable.

The stars were, of course, Ah Kwi's prawns. Ah Kwi uses fresh sea prawns from nearby Pontian, which he bought from the Larkin wet market downstairs. And, Ah Kwi prepares his prawns in the time honoured laid back way. Ah Kwi keeps the fresh prawns chilled in a small container of ice water and cooks a handful only when there is an order.

This photo shows how it is done at the average prawn mee stall (not Ah Kwi). The prawns are normally cooked and shelled in bulk, leaving the shelled prawns exposed to air until they are sold and eaten, sometimes hours later.

Here, Ah Kwi shells his prawns one by one and serves them to the customer right away.

Bear with me as I parade more shots of the prawns :)) I just love them, these plump juicy fresh sea prawns from Ah Kwi.

Ah Kwi's broth is a blend of pork and prawn stock with the latter being the dominant flavour. The umami flavour from the sea prawns was robust.

Chili padi lovers, remember to ask Ah Kwi for this green chili padi. These little fire crackers are stinging hot and let go a pleasant aroma when we bite into its crunchy pulp.

Like his prawns, Ah Kwi cut his chili padi only when there is an order. In this way, the customer gets fragrant fresh cut chili rather than those "rusty" oxidised and shrivelled ones we normally get elsewhere.

For friends who may be interested, Singapore Media Corp artistes are sometimes seen at Larkin in search of the old style Singapore prawn noodles at Ngew Seng Kwi stall.

Larkin bus station food centre has several interesting old food stalls that had been here for many years. The environment is bright and clean. I will be here, food spotting for a few more times.

Putu Piring Larkin Dan Kuih-Muih in Johor Bahru, Malaysia

Joe, my Johor Bahru friend showed me this special "drive thru" putu piring place which I fell in love with instantly. (Thanks! Joe.) The very next day, I brought my Singapore friends over to show off my new good food find :) They were equally impressed :)

This putu piring stall is in the compound of the family home of the very warm and friendly Enche Bakar along Jalan Langkasuka in Larkin, Johor Bahru.

Enche Bakar said that he has been making putu piring in the same traditional way for more than 30 years.

There was a constant stream of cars coming into the compound to take-away Enche Bakar's famous putu piring and kuih-muih. I saw many cars with out of state and Singapore licence plates. Obviously, the fame of Enche Bakar's putu piring has travelled far and wide, and deservedly so.

I love these piping hot putu pirings. They were soft and delicately sweet from the gula Melaka. The grated coconut had a little bit of salt added. The appetising yellowish colour came from tumeric powder added to the rice flour. Eating the soft and sweet putu piring together with the slightly salty and tender grated coconut treated my taste buds to an interesting mix of flavours and texture. I polished off 5 putu pirings (for RM2) with a teh tarik easily even with a ¾ tank full tummy.

It was fun trying to hold the piping hot and tender putu piring with the fingers as they taste best, straight off those cute looking steaming cones:)

When you are around the Larkin area, I highly recommend swinging by the "drive thru" Putu Piring Larkin to enjoy the warmth and friendliness of Enche Bakar's stall and to take away some lovely putu pirings that will warm the hearts of your loved ones. Really.

Ramadhan Bazaar by Bus to Larkin Stadium in Johor Bahru

Ramadhan Bazaar

This is my third Ramadhan bazaar visit this year, and this time, I took public bus (SMRT 950 and 170) from Woodlands Bus Interchange to Larkin Bus Station.

Ramadhan Bazaar

I boarded bus 950 at Woodlands Bus Interchange. After clearing Singapore and Malaysia immigration, I boarded bus 170 at the JB CIQ. Bus 170 will take us to Larkin bus station which is a 10-15 minutes ride. Larkin stadium is another 10-15 minutes walk from Larkin bus station. Ask for directions when you are at Larkin bus station. To return to Singapore, just back track and take the buses in reverse order.

Like the Ramadhan bazaars at Plaza Angsana and Pandan that I have visited, the bazaar at Larkin also has plenty of interesting food on offer.

Let's just take a sampling of what we can find at Larkin Stadium Ramadhan bazaar.

Ramadhan Bazaar

This delicious looking dish is known as Roti Pita Kebab.

Ramadhan Bazaar

Mobile barbecue fish ball satay on the back of a Honda cub. Something that I've not seen before.

Ramadhan Bazaar

The fish balls are homemade in Kelantan and delivered by bus everyday to Larkin bus station. That's a very neat arrangement!

Ramadhan Bazaar

These are Sata, a traditional dish from the eastern state of Terengganu, consisting of spiced fish meat wrapped in banana leaves and grilled over charcoal. (Thanks to Laura Benjamin for the information.)

Ramadhan Bazaar

Nasi kukus originally from Kelantan is getting very popular in Johor. Frying chicken for the nasi kukus.

Ramadhan Bazaar

Customers pick the piece of fried chicken that they want to go with their nasi kukus.

Ramadhan Bazaar

Roti John. Another popular staple, there are several Roti John stands here.

Ramadhan Bazaar

There was a long queue waiting for this lady's fried kway teow and she told me that she had been to my johorkaki blog, YAY!

Ramadhan Bazaar

Grilling kebabs.

Ramadhan Bazaar

Ayam percik.

Ramadhan Bazaar

Barbecue chicken.

Ramadhan Bazaar

Spring rolls.

Ramadhan Bazaar

Flipping the dough for the murtabak. There are 3, if not 4, murtabak stalls here.

Ramadhan Bazaar

Grilled fish covered under a thick blanket of fiery sambal chili.

Ramadhan Bazaar

Sup kambing or mutton soup. We can choose the parts that we want to go with the soup.

Ramadhan Bazaar

Frying keropok lekor or fish cake.

Ramadhan Bazaar

Location: Larkin Stadium (officially known as Stadium Tan Sri Dato' Hj Hassan Yunos)
Address: Junction of Jalan Dato Jaafar and Jalan Sentosa

Ais Kacang @ Awiet Corner in Larkin Bomba, Johor Bahru, Malaysia

Awiet Corner at the food centre near Larkin Bomba just beside the fire station is famous for its cold desserts, especially its ais kacang special.

This is Awiet Corner's RM4 Special. Isn’t this irresistible, especially on hot sizzling days in humid, tropical Johor?

On top of the little mount of shaved ice were two scoops of vanilla ice cream. Over the ice cream and ice mountain, they drizzled chocolate syrup and dropped a few roasted peanuts.

Ice Kacang can be found everywhere in Malaysia and Singapore but only in Johor will you find delicious melted chocolate topping over it.

The ice mountain itself was doused with rose syrup, evaporated milk and gula Melaka.

Buried underneath the mountain of ice were boiled red beans, creamy sweet corn, grass jelly and attap seeds.

The ice mountain crumbled rather quickly even under the cool shade of Larkin Bomba food centre – the heat attacking it from top and me stabbing its underside with my plastic spoon digging for treasures inside. Attacked from the top and bottom, the ice kacang was soon reduced to a sweet concoction of rose and chocolate syrup, soft sweet corn, gula Melaka, evaporated milk and melted vanilla ice cream. We were given a straw to drink up this multi-flavoured sweet mixture.
