Penang Prawn Mee at Tai Soon Kopitiam in Taman Sri Tebrau, Johor Bahru

Penang-Prawn-Mee-Johor-BahruPenang-Prawn-Mee-Johor-Bahru

I am a big fan of Penang prawn mee and lor mee.

Penang-Prawn-Mee-Johor-Bahru

Today, I stumbled upon 168 Penang prawn mee stall. I've been here before - Tai Soon kopitiam in Taman Sri Tebaru. Noticed that it is always busy. Saw this stall mentioned before in passing by a reader on my Facebook Page.

I stepped forward to take a few sniffs of the pot of lor (prawn broth). The aroma of savoury prawniness was clearly present.

Penang-Prawn-Mee-Johor-Bahru

Took a peek at the prawns - pretty impressive - thick and long like a man's thumb.

I decided then to bet the day's calories and cholesterol on this stall. It paid off rather handsomely, I would say :)

Mr. Lee who is from Butterworth (Penang) has been running this stall at Tai Soon kopitiam with his son for 12 years. Before that, Mr. Lee's stall was at Lien Hoe Complex for 8 years. Twenty years of experience selling Penang prawn mee!

Penang-Prawn-Mee-Johor-Bahru

Ah... steaming hot Penang lor mee.. can you feel the sticky, gooey, savoury, prawny gravy? The lor or gravy was simply superb. It was robustly umami. This picture makes me crave for it again :P

Penang-Prawn-Mee-Johor-Bahru

I asked for the medium sized bowl and was a little surprised that it costs RM7.50. I later asked Mr. Lee about it and he explained that the medium sized bowls come with live prawns which are expensive. The margin is low and he has to rely on volume to sustain his business. (The RM5.50 small bowls come with small thumbnail size prawns.)

Penang-Prawn-Mee-Johor-Bahru

Ah... the Penang prawn noodles.

Penang-Prawn-Mee-Johor-Bahru

The RM7.50 bowl comes with three of these good size prawns.

Penang-Prawn-Mee-Johor-Bahru

The full bodied prawn broth, not thicken like the lor, but it was equally robust in flavour. Superb.

Penang-Prawn-Mee-Johor-Bahru

I like enjoying savoury broths with bee hoon as they do the best job of soaking up the flavours.

Penang-Prawn-Mee-Johor-Bahru

The homemade chili paste - mildly spicy with a tangy note. I didn't really need this as I was focusing on the savoury prawn broth. This stall doesn't serve chili powder but I didn't miss it either.

Penang-Prawn-Mee-Johor-Bahru

The pot of lor mee gravy, nearly empty.

Penang-Mee-Johor-Bahru

Vinegar lovers, do remember to ask for this vinegar to go with your lor mee.

Penang-Prawn-Mee-Johor-Bahru

Run out of pork? No problem. Get some char siew from the neighbour's stall and carry on business as usual :)

Penang-Prawn-Mee-Johor-Bahru

By 1:00pm the stall was running out of prawn broth as well and it was time to call it a day. Mr. Lee told me that it has been like this every day and especially so during weekends when they are sold out by around 12:30pm. So, be early folks if you are going for 168 Penang prawn noodles.

Ipoh Kway Teow Soup in New Star Kopitiam Near Plaza Sentosa, Johor Bahru, Malaysia

Today, my friend Bryan brought me to this little stall at New Star kopitiam near to Plaza Sentosa (the former Lien Hoe Complex) in Taman Sentosa.

Bryan said I must try this stall's Ipoh Kway Teow soup.

One sip and I was literary bowed over by the full bodied soup which had a distinct prawny, umami flavour.

Other than the soup, the rest of the ingredients that made up the dish such as the hor fun, prawns and pieces of chicken were pretty ordinary in taste. But, the outstanding soup alone was enough to make me add this stall to my list of favourites.

When I saw the little mountain of prawn heads used to make the soup, there was little wonder as to why the soup was so deeply prawny and umami.

Furthermore, this stall uses sea prawns which are more flavourful than farm bred freshwater prawns.

I will be back to try out their equally popular prawn mee.

San Ming 三民 Penang Prawn Mee in Hengs Hengs Kopitiam, Taman Pelangi, Johor Bahru, Malaysia

We stumbled upon San Ming 三民 Penang Prawn Mee in Hengs Hengs kopitiam in Taman Pelangi while searching for the best Penang prawn mee stall in JB.

At first, San Ming 三民 seemed like any other Penang prawn mee stall. Sitting and observing the goings on at San Ming stall, we noticed a constant stream of customers.

The boss MR Loh, a Penangite who had been selling Penang prawn mee for thirty years, was busy cooking and dishing out his Penang prawn mee, non stop.

It was about 1:00pm - seeing MR Loh digging deep into the pot and hearing the clanging of the ladle against the near empty pot, we made a quick decision to order a bowl to try out.

And, we were glad that we did.

San Ming's prawn soup had that delicate balance of savoury prawny sweetness, saltiness, and spiciness. Where San Ming's soup had the edge over the other Penang prawn mee stalls was in the soup's robust body.

While others' Penang prawn mee soup tended to be relatively clear and light, San Ming's soup was murky and had body. The soup was savoury on the taste buds and was slightly grainy yet smooth on the tongue. I liked this "umami" feel in San Ming's prawn mee soup.

San Ming's generously sized shrimps and slices of lean pork were fresh and juicy sweet.

Before the soup ran out, we quickly ordered another bowl, now a "dry" kway teow version to sample.

The sauce of the dry kway teow was good and well balanced but it was still the accompanying soup, the star of the show, that captured all our attention.

The accompanying savoury spicy chili paste on a tiny disposable plastic dish was good enough. With such an excellent soup, the chili too was neglected by us :P

San Ming 三民 Penang Prawn Mee is one of my favourites in JB.

喜记 Penang prawn mee in Koon Chong 群众 Kopitiam in Taman Sri Tebrau, Johor Bahru, Malaysia

Several of my JB friends are ardent fans of 喜记 Penang prawn mee in Koon Chong 群众 kopitiam in Taman Sri Tebrau. They have been asking me to check out 喜记's best Penang prawn mee in JB.

With such strong recommendations, I had to visit 喜记 Penang prawn mee :)

喜记 Penang prawn mee is set deep inside Koon Chong 群众 kopitiam, so we had to go right inside the kopitiam to locate it.

Early in the morning and Ah 喜 was already busy whipping up his popular Penang prawn mee for a constant stream of waiting customers.

Ah 喜 was assisted by his wife and son, so service was good and fast even during peak hours.

This delicious bowl of 喜记 Penang prawn mee costs a reasonable RM4.50.

Penang prawn mee is all about it's prawn broth. 喜记's light looking soup has a robust savoury, prawny flavour - a well balanced blend of delicate saltiness, sweetness and spicy hot.

My friend Kumes aptly described the taste as "umami".

Another thing that sets 喜记 Penang prawn mee apart from other Penang prawn mee stalls in JB are these two little steel bowls, one containing chili powder and the other chili sauce.

If you like your prawn noodle soup extra spicy, just add this "gun powder" to fire up your  taste buds.

The prawn mee comes with slices of fresh shrimps, and pork. These go very well with the chili sauce which is slightly tangy, distinctly prawny and very spicy.

喜记 Penang prawn mee is definitely among the best Penang prawn mee in Johor Bahru.

Penang Prawn Mee @ Lim Hong Yong Stall 林记 Stall in Taman Serene Food Centre (off Taman Pelangi), Johor Bahru

亚杰 making a bowl of 林记's marvellous Penang prawn noodles

Lim Hong Yong 林记's Penang prawn mee at Taman Serene food centre seriously WOWed me.

I tried hard to recall a tastier Penang prawn mee that I have eaten anywhere in Malaysia and Singapore, and I failed! (I know I am going to get a lot of flak for this statement :P)

Funny that my favourite Penang prawn mee had to be found tucked in a humble, though popular food centre in Taman Serene, Johor Bahru.

These yellow noodles may look plain like any other but ahh... when these noodles hit our tongue, our delighted taste buds awoke to the first hints of the gastronomic pleasure that was to come. The flavour of the prawn soup was so rich, that even these plain yellow noodles which were merely wet with the broth brought on a flood of that distinct gorgeous taste of prawn stock.

If the prawn stock is the soul of Penang prawn mee, then 林记's prawn stock is alive with body and soul. 林记's prawn stock is full bodied like the way a good robust, full bodied coffee would feel - saturated with natural prawny flavour.

林记's prawn stock may look like any other but the naturally sweet, savoury taste is unlike any other that I have tasted before. And, all these taste and flavour were achieved without any hint of cheap, artificial taste enhancers like sugar or MSG.

林记's stock is already so outstanding by itself and yet, when we stirred in a dab of their homemade sambal, the taste index was raised to yet the next level!

If you like your Penang prawn mee extra spicy, make sure to ask for 林记's sambal chili. The outstanding hot chili paste is blended with dried prawns and other spices for that delicious hot, tangy and tingling taste.

Just a warning - Lim Hong Yong 林记's Penang prawn mee is addictive. I can't take my mind off it, ever since I tried it yesterday.
