Straits View Seafood in Sungai Rengit, Pengarang, Johor

Straits-View-Seafood-Sungai-Rengit-Pengarang-Johor

Little Sungai Rengit town in Pengerang, Johor is renown for it's seafood, especially the local, wild Spiny Lobsters that live among the rocks off it's shores.

Most people know that Jade Garden restaurant is the "king of the hill" over here. Always on the lookout for new options, I have been looking for alternatives, worthy of the rather long drive from JB to Sungai Rengit.

Last year, I stumbled upon Straits View Seafood 海景轩海鲜酒家 while searching for the alternative. The decor at Straits View is very basic, almost bare bones - actually a little uninspiring. It was the mention by the friendly auntie at the corner sundry shop when I asked her for recommendations that gave me a bit more confidence to give it a try.

On my first visit, I was food hunting alone and just ordered one lobster to try. I liked it and wrote a post on it - my first on Straits View Seafood.

Stanley the Boss

Stanley the boss later invited me for a second visit where I tried more of their dishes prepared by Stanley's partner Chef Liew. It was good! This is my second post on Straits View.

Recently, Stanley informed me that Chef Liew has left to work in a restaurant in Melbourne, Australia. A new chef, Chef Chuan 全叔 has joined Stanley. I am eager to try the food at Straits View again.

Uncle Chuan 全叔

Chef Chuan or Uncle Chuan 全叔 as he is known is a veteran with many years of experience including at Pulai Springs Seafood, other well known restaurants in Malaysia, and overseas in Switzerland.

These were the dishes we had at Straits View Seafood yesterday.

Straits-View-Seafood-Sungai-Rengit-Pengarang-Johor

The first was Salted Egg Sliced Lotus Root (XL-RM25; L-RM20; S-RM15). While photographing this dish, the breeze from the nearby sea sent the aroma of fried curry leaves and salted eggs towards me. I couldn't wait to try this speciality of Chef Chuan. Taking my first bite into a piece of the lotus root, I know that this would be a hit with the others that were dinning with me. The lotus root slices had crispy edges and a nice firmness inside. The combination of interesting textures gave this dish a very likable mouth feel. Stir fried with a thick layer of salted eggs, curry leaves and spices, this appetiser made us hungry and it disappeared within minutes!

Straits-View-Seafood-Sungai-Rengit-Pengarang-Johor

Signature Crab Gravy Bean Curd (XL-RM25; L-RM20; S-RM12). This homemade bean curd looks humble and simple, I didn't expect it to taste as good as it did! This dish surprised me with its sweetness from the crab meat gravy. The homemade bean curd was soft, smooth and almost runny. The slight crispness on the outside was barely holding the tofu together. The bean curd was first deep fried to achieve this crisp outer layer. We finished this "self dissolving" dish within minutes too!

Straits-View-Seafood-Sungai-Rengit-Pengarang-Johor

Sizzling Ostrich Meat (RM24). When eating seafood, we all know that freshness is very important. The same goes to ostrich meat! The local ostrich farm just around the corner supplies Straits View with the ostrich meat. The ostrich meat is served on a hot plate and comes to the table pipping hot with bubbling, steaming gravy. The ostrich meat is extra tender, more so than beef. This sounds like a strange description for meat but it felt "light, fluffy and airy" to me. The ostrich meat tasted fresh and sweet with ginger, spring onion and onions.

Sambal Kang Kung (XL-RM20; L-RM15; S-RM10). While waiting for the dishes to come, I sat at the table looking at the restaurant helpers prepare the Kang Kung. Only the leafy parts of the plant were harvested, while the stems were discarded. Such tedious work translated into a very successful dish. This very well executed sambal Kang Kung dish has a rich sambal aroma. It was a little spicy and not too salty. Since only the leafy parts of the plants were used, this crunchy dish didn't require much chewing like other veggie dishes! I like it! Making this veggie dish even more special is the fact that the veggie came from a veggie small holding less than 2 km away! How much more freshness do you get! Must order.

Straits-View-Seafood-Sungai-Rengit-Pengarang-Johor

For crab, I opted for something familiar, hence the Black Pepper Crab (imported - RM9.50 per 100g; local - RM6 per 100g). Like its name suggests this dish is power packed with black pepper flavour! Teasingly pungent and spicy, yet not overpowering. The crab is locally fished, just like all other ingredients used in today's meal.

Straits-View-Seafood-Sungai-Rengit-Pengarang-Johor

The fresh crab had a natural sweetness which was a good balance for the thick black pepper sauce that covers the whole crab. The sauce is made with flavourful ingredients like oyster sauce and dark soya sauce, and not forgetting freshly ground black pepper. The crab meat is soft but not mushy, just the way it should be. This is a great dish to try!

Straits-View-Seafood-Sungai-Rengit-Pengarang-Johor

Cheesy lobster (XL-RM18 per 100g; L-RM16 per 100g; M-RM12 per 100g). This was the star of the meal as Chef Chuan and owner Stanley are very proud of this new dish. I've never seen lobster done this way in this lobster town - Chef Chuan got his liking for cheese and Western style cooking from his chef experience in Switzerland.

Straits-View-Seafood-Sungai-Rengit-Pengarang-Johor

By melting 2 types of cheese on this baked lobster dish and baking it just right, I tasted the freshness and sweetness of the juicy lobster.

Straits-View-Seafood-Sungai-Rengit-Pengarang-Johor

The lobster flesh was very sweet. The cheese added a slight savouriness and is a very good pairing. I loved this lobster dish.

Sea Disc 海饼

This is a rather interesting dish as I've never seen this type of shell fish before. It's very flat like a computer CD and has a beautiful shell that resembles a scallop (but larger and more flat). The locals call it Sea Disc 海饼 because of it's shape. It's flesh has a smooth and slippery texture that can be swallowed without chewing! Living wild in the local waters, this sea disc is a must try!

Straits-View-Seafood-Sungai-Rengit-Pengarang-Johor
Cheese Baked Sea Disc

Garlic Steamed Sea Disc

There are two ways of cooking this, either baked with melted cheese (RM4 per disc) or steamed with garlic (RM3 per disc). I really enjoyed the cheesy version but the others liked the garlic version more. Both types of cooking were well received! I would come back for this dish again!

Straits-View-Seafood-Sungai-Rengit-Pengarang-Johor

After our meal, ready to go home, a man came in on a motorcycle with a sack of wrying lobsters. Small fishermen just take their day's catch and sell them directly to the restaurants. Today's catch was 5 kg of lobsters. Stanley just took them all - can't tell you how much he paid for this pile (business confidential mah :P ).

Humble Straits View Seafood - well executed fresh seafood at competitive prices - worth a try, definitely.

Lobsters at Jade Garden Seafood Corner at Sungai Rengit, Pengerang, Johor - Second Visit 翡翠园海鲜酒家

Lobsters-Sungai-Rengit-Pengerang-Johor

Yesterday, I brought my high school schoolmates to Sungai Rengit for lobsters :) We were in high school together in the 1970s. This was a trip we had been talking about for a long time. So we came to Sungai Rengit excited - talking and laughing like children on a school excursion after the final exam :)

Lobsters-Sungai-Rengit-Pengerang-Johor

I picked Jade Garden for this special trip because this is by far the most popular seafood restaurant in Sungai Rengit. I've also tried Jade Garden before and I like their "Superior Broth" lobster. It was lunch time on a Friday, and as usual there was a good crowd of diners in the bright and spacious restaurant.

How fresh are lobsters in Sungai Rengit? Well, they come straight from the sea (a stone's throw away) in plastic bags with no water. Once they arrived, the lobsters were immediately sorted according to species and size, and tossed into the display tanks.

We asked the staff who came to take our orders to recommend their signature lobster dishes. There were five of us, so we ordered one lobster for each person. These were the lobsters dishes recommended by Jade Garden to us :)

Lobster in Superior Broth

I had this "Superior Broth 上湯" lobster before during my last visit and this is my favourite style of cooking lobster. The savoury buttery broth brings out the exquisite flavour of the spiny lobster very well.

Lobsters-Sungai-Rengit-Pengerang-Johor

Today's "Superior Broth" was slightly heavier on saltiness than my last experience. We all agreed that the thick lobster flesh was springy and refreshingly crunchy.

Lobsters-Sungai-Rengit-Pengerang-Johor
Fragrant Fried Lobsters

For our second dish, Jade Garden recommended this "Fragrant Fried Lobsters 香炒龙虾". After the slightly salty "Superior Broth", looking at this dish, we were initially wary that this dish might be a little too heavy on saltiness.

Lobsters-Sungai-Rengit-Pengerang-Johor

The "Fragrant Fried Lobsters 香炒龙虾" turned out not overly salty and we all liked this style, though it was slightly greasy. The herbs used to cook the lobsters indeed spiced up and perfumed the lobsters.

Lobsters-Sungai-Rengit-Pengerang-Johor

The gravy though a bit greasy was finger licking good :) The lobster meat was still bouncy though a little drier compared to the "Superior Broth 上湯 " version.

Marmite Lobsters

After our lunch, we noticed that the next table had these luscious looking lobsters. LOL as usual, I could not resist asking the customer if I could have permission to take a photo of it so that I could share it on this blog and also to come back again for it at my next visit.

The gracious customer who is a regular told me that this "Marmite Lobster" is Jade Garden's best lobster dish and is offered only to regular customers. LOL I will make sure I ask for "Marmite Lobster" at the my visit, though I am not sure if visiting them a third time qualifies me as a regular :P

I also noticed that some customers had a large bowl of interesting looking herbal chicken soup. (I didn't take a picture of this because the bowls were all nearly empty :P ) The regular customer told me that this special chicken soup is one of Jade Garden's best dishes and available only on Fridays and Saturdays. Again, it is only for regular customers. LOL I hope to have a chance to try this next time :)

Lobsters in Sungai Rengit, Pengerang, the Lobster Town of Johor

Lobster-Johor

Spiny lobsters thrive off the rocky shorelines of Pengerang. The flesh of the spiny lobster is priced for its sweetness and bouncy mouth feel.

Lobsters-Sungai-Rengit-Pengerang

Naturally, seafood restaurants serving live lobsters sprout like mushrooms in small, laid back Sungai Rengit town which is aptly nicknamed Lobster Town.

Sungai-Rengit-Pengerang

I love eating lobsters and had been trying out the seafood restaurants in Sungai Rengit, one by one.

Lobsters-Sungai Rengit-Pengerang

Jade Garden 翡翠园 is probably the best known one in Sungai Rengit. Like any good restaurant, Jade Garden does lobster in a variety of ways, but their claim to fame is their Lobster in "Superior  Broth" 上湯.

Jade Garden's "superior broth" is a savoury, rich buttery runny gravy with wolf berries that works well to bring out the natural sweetness of the lobster flesh. As the "premier" restaurant in Sungai Rengit, prices are at a premium in Jade Garden.

Lobsters-Sungai-Rengit-Pengerang

Yoou Kee 佑记 has been in Sungai Rengit for over 20 years, operating just beside Jade Garden. When asking the Sungai Rengit town folk for recommendations, they will point you to the likes of Yoou Kee for the food quality and the competitive pricing.

Lobsters-Sungai- Rengit-Pengerang

We tried Yoou Kee's Butter Lobsters. The buttery batter though thin, kept the lobster's natural juices intact while bringing out well the flavours of the lobster flesh.

Lobsters-Sungai-Rengit-Pengerang

The fairly new (opened Jun 2012) Straits View 海景轩 does a similar version of Jade Garden's Lobster in "Superior Broth" 上湯. However, the gravy here is thicker, more syrupy in texture and more buttery in flavour.

Lobsters-Sungai-Rengit-Pengerang

The newest seafood restaurant in Sungai Rengit is Hai Zhi Lian 海之恋. This is their Lotus Root Fried Lobster. The lobster was encased in a thick layer of crumbly batter.

Lobsters-Sungai-Rengit-Pengerang

The batter did a good job of keeping the lobster juicy and sweet. Here, the batter itself was interesting. Made with a blend of 5 types of flour and butter, the batter was feathery light and fluffy. The batter crumbled easily and literally melted in the mouth. I found myself indulging in the batter like people enjoying greasy popcorn.

Lobsters-Sungai-Rengit-Pengerang

At Hai Zhi Lian 海之恋 we also tried their lobster sashimi.

Lobsters-Sungai-Rengit-Pengerang

The translucent slices of lobster flesh looked and had mouth feel that felt like refreshing pamelo fruit, except that it was firmer.

Lobsters-Sungai-Rengit-Pengerang

We could dip the lobster in the savoury house blended sauce or wasabi.

So, there you are, a quick survey of the lobsters of Sungai Rengit. I will be adding to this list as I try more lobsters in Sungai Rengit, one by one. You may like to have your own lobster adventures too in seafood paradise, just one and a half hour's drive from downtown JB  :)

The newest seafood restaurant in Sungai Rengit is Hai Zhi Lian 海之恋. This is their Lotus Root Fried Lobster. The lobster was encased in a thick layer of crumbly batter.

At Hai Zhi Lian 海之恋 we also tried their lobster sashimi.

The translucent slices of lobster flesh looked and had mouth feel that felt like refreshing pamelo fruit, except that it was firmer.

Lobsters and Crabs at Yoou Kee 佑记 Seafood in Sungai Rengit, Pengerang, Johor

Crab-Sungai-Rengit-Pengerang-Johor

We went to Sungai Rengit, Pengerang again for another round of lobster hunting. We have tried the famous Jade Garden, and the newly opened Straits View and Hai Zhi Lian. So today, we wanted to try something else.

As usual, we walked the small shops in Sungai Rengit town and asked the locals which is their preferred seafood restaurant. Yoou Kee 佑记 came up for mention a few times and so we chose Yoou Kee for this round.

Yoou Kee is a typical, simple Malaysian small town street side restaurant. It is actually located right next door to Jade Garden, the largest seafood restaurant in Sungai Rengit. Still, Yoou Kee is holding its own well with their own loyal clientele.

Mr Low, the owner and Chef of Yoou Kee hails from Muar and had been working in restaurants for over 30 years. MR Low worked in Singapore restaurants for 10 years and then his own restaurant Yoou Kee for the next 20 years. Observing him in the kitchen, Mr Low seemed almost nonchalant with every precise movement effortless and efficient.

It was a Monday afternoon when we were there, which is usually slow but I noticed a few regulars dropping by. There was an extended family from Gelang Patah who came here mainly for Yoou Kee's Tung Tung (sea snail). They even ta pau (take away) another serving of Tung Tung to bring home. We did not order Tung Tung this round but will definitely try it at the next visit.

We had lobsters, of course, and Mr Low suggested his popular Butter Lobsters.

The live lobsters were simply cut in half, deep fried in oil and then lightly stir fried in a butter sauce.

The flavour of the butter sauce was light which was good as it complemented and enhanced the natural flavour of the lobsters.

By now after trying a few lobster dishes in Sungai Rengit, we were pretty accustomed to live and expertly prepared lobsters.

Yoou Kee's tasty lobsters were testimony to Mr Low's 30 years of experience.

When the Butter Lobsters arrived at the table, my first impression was that it looked a tad dry. But, looks deceive - all the lobster goodness was trapped inside that thin layer of batter.

Everything in the lobster such as its juiciness, bounciness and natural sweetness of the flesh were well preserved. The batter and butter sauce simply let the lobster's natural flavours shine.

We had a large crab prepared in salted egg sauce - another popular dish at Yoou Kee.

The salted egg sauce was savoury and complemented the natural sweetness of the meaty crab well. MR Low again demonstrated his depth of artistry in wielding the wok and in temperature control.

It was almost redundant to say that the salted egg sauce brought out the natural sweetness of the crab. So, we shall just let the picture speak for itself.

MR Low whipped out this savoury fried vegetable in an instant and it had that same simple and nice signature light touch of Mr Low.

Caught sight of this simple note stuck on a glass panel at Yoou Kee promoting their Chinese New Year set menus.

There you have it - another good seafood restaurant in Sungai Rengit that won't waste your trip to Pengerang. If you are vacationing in Desaru or just want to get away from the city over the weekend, you may want to explore the seafood restaurants of Sungai Rengit.
