Bak Kut Teh @ Hwa Mei 华美 Restaurant @ Jalan Lumba Kuda

Hwa Mei is an old Bak Kut Teh restaurant popular among Johoreans. The famous restaurant which has been around since the 1960s, is tucked at the far end corner of a row of shop houses. A big old tree shields the restaurant from the morning sun. Hwa Mei is in the cluster of shops with many other gastronomic gems at the junction of Jalan Lumba Kuda and Jalan Tanjung Puteri.

One of the best Bak Kut Teh shops in Johor, Hwa Mei is a favourite place for friends to gather over a delicious meal and enjoy Chinese tea together. Many bring their own favourite brews to share with friends.

According to Hwa Mei’s loyal fans, the Bak Kut Teh's taste has not changed since the beginning.

And what a taste!

The Buk Kut Teh here is in the Hokkien style – fresh pork and bones are stewed with herbs in a dark coloured broth. The resulting flesh is naturally sweet and slightly firm, yet falls off the bone easily.

Though the soup looks dark, it is only mildly salty – just the right combination of saltiness, sweetness and fragrance extracted from fresh ingredients and herbs.

The secret is in using the freshest meats and bones and in using charcoal to boil the concoction. The concoction is boiled for many hours, infusing the meat and bones with all the flavours from the herbs. This fragrance fills the air in the entire restaurant adding to the enjoyment of the experience.

The bowl of medium sized serving of Bak Kut Teh costs RM10.50.

I will definitely bring my Bak Kut Teh kakis here to enjoy this special version of the classic dish.
