Paper Baked Chicken @ Teck Sing in Taman Sentosa in Johor Bahru

For many foodies, Teck Sing’s paper baked herbal kampung chicken 德星药材纸包鸡 is simply irresistible.

The chicken arrived at the table wrapped in a thick wad of parchment paper. When we gingerly tore open the wrapping, wafts of piping hot aromatic herbal steam raised to our noses. The chicken was still stewing in the bubbling juices and herbs.

It smelled so good that it made our mouth water and we were eager to rip into the chicken even though we actually just had a sumptuous lunch minutes ago at another restaurant. (Passing near Teck Sing restaurant after eating our lunch, the driver [me J ] couldn’t resist stopping over for this paper baked chicken.)

Some of us were hesitant as we just had a heavy lunch and were feeling full, but once we bite into that chicken, all the hems and haws of protests turned into oohhs and aahhs of pleasure and praise for this outstanding herbal chicken.

The chicken was so tender it fell apart with gentle tucks. The moist and juicy flesh fell off the bones easily and melted quickly with gentle chewing. The herbal fragrance was mild and subtle. The dominant flavour was the natural sweetness and hints of saltiness of the young kampung chicken.

This delicious and exquisite meal costs RM19 or SGD8.

I am organising another group meal and am picking this restaurant again as I am sure that most of my guests will be impressed with Teck Sing’s signature chicken 德星药材纸包鸡.
