Jakarta Street Food

Jakarta-Street-Food

I have always wanted to explore Jakarta street food as Indonesian cuisine has a strong influence in nearby Johor and Singapore. Nasi padang, mee soto and ayam penyet are all Indonesian, just to name a few.

Recently, I had the opportunity to try out Indonesian street food thanks to Jakarta Tourism Office and Winsemius Consulting. I've been to Jakarta several times in the past on business before my blogging days but never had the chance to experience the Jakarta streets. (Always cloistered in hotels and fed hotel or conference food.)

Jakarta-Street-Food

Jakarta street hawkers have the same buzz, energy and rhythm as the colossal city. The amazing self contained push cart kitchen stalls are small and narrow so that they can weave in and out of the ebb and flow of the city's famous traffic.

Jakarta-Street-Food

Most are one-man operations.

Jakarta-Street-Food
Jakarta-Street-Food

Yet the tiny stalls can whip up delicious hot meals and homely comfort to many customers everyday. This reflects the ingenuity, resourcefulness and hardy determination of the street vendors.

Jakarta-Street-Food-Indonesia

The texture, aroma, flavour and colour of the dish is a window to the hawker, his customers, the city they live in and their hometown.

Jakarta-Street-Food

The variety of food served by street vendors reflect the cosmopolitan metropolis of Jakarta. Street food from every corner of the archipelago find their way to the Capital and financial centre of the vast country.

Le Grandeur Palm Resort Johor Xin Shan Long 新山龙 Set Lunch

Yvonne from Le Grandeur Palm Resort invited me to try out the set lunch at the resort's Xin Shan Long 新山龙 which is part of Le Grandeur's Fusion Restaurant which includes Sobasei which serves Japanese cuisine.

Le Grandeur Palm Resort is located just next to Senai Airport and near to Johor Premium Outlets (JPO), LEGOLAND and the Little Red Cube. Some of us may remember the Sofitel and Mercure which previously ran this resort.

Le-Grandeur-Palm-Resort-Johor-Xin-Shan-Long-新山龙-Set-Lunch

To locate Xin Shan Long 新山龙 in the sprawling resort, it is about 30 metres to the left of the resort reception/ registration. Look out for these large Japanese style box lanterns over the entrance to Xin Shan Long/ Sobasei.

Le-Grandeur-Palm-Resort-Johor-Xin-Shan-Long-新山龙-Set-Lunch

Inside Xin Shan Long, the restaurant is decked out in classic Chinese fine dining style. There are tables with window views of the resort greenery.

Besides the a la carte menu, Xin Shan Long has a Chinese-Japanese Fusion Set Lunch menu which Yvonne invited us to try. The set lunches cater to 4 persons (RM88+), 5-7 persons (RM175+) and 8-10 persons (RM250+). There is a 6% government tax. No service charge is levied.

We tried the 5-7 persons set (RM175+).

Our lunch started with this mixed sushi set which is prepared by Sobasei restaurant - the Japanese half of Le Grandeur's Fusion Restaurant.

Le-Grandeur-Palm-Resort-Johor-Xin-Shan-Long-新山龙-Set-Lunch

The fresh handmade sushi was a good start to the set lunch,

Le-Grandeur-Palm-Resort-Johor-Set-Lunch

Near came the salted vegetables with bean curd soup. Appetising homely soup made with salted vegetables, carrots, tomatoes, spring unions, bean curd, fresh fish and shrimps.

Le-Grandeur-Palm-Resort-Johor-Set-Lunch

Tender savoury chicken teriyaki with sweet notes. I love the charred skin :D

Le-Grandeur-Palm-Resort-Johor-Set-Lunch

Stir fried ostrich meat with spring onion and ginger. Made with imported Australian ostrich, the meat is like thin slices of lean cut of beef. Tender, juicy, and well seasoned. I like this savoury dish.

Le-Grandeur-Palm-Resort-Johor-Set-Lunch

Mapo tofu 麻婆豆腐 or Szechuan bean curd with minced chicken. Another savoury home cook comfort dish.

Le-Grandeur-Palm-Resort-Johor-Set-Lunch

Stir fried shrimps with seasonal vegetables like broccoli, carrots and cucumbers. Lightly stir fried to bring out the natural flavours and crunchiness of the fresh ingredients.

Le-Grandeur-Palm-Resor-Johor-Set-Lunch

To wrap up the meal, we had old school chilled longan with almond bean curd 杏仁豆腐.

Le-Grandeur-Palm-Resort-Johor-Set-Lunch

Throughout, the friendly staff were attentive and cheerful, adding enjoyment to our lunch.

Our complimentary hot Chinese tea was constantly topped up by smiling staff :D The set lunch also come with free flow of steam rice to go with the tasty dishes.

If you are in LEGOLAND, The Little Red Cube, JPO or generally around Kulai and Senai, and are looking for a good place for group lunch, this lunch set offering by Le Grandeur Palm Resort is a very good option. While the food won't make many scream in delight, its homely goodness is very likeable.

The relaxed atmosphere at the leafy resort of sprawling well tended greenery, the classy ambiance of the cosy air conditioned restaurant with impeccable service, Le Grandeur's set lunch is definitely good value and a tasty deal.

Christmas-time

Something happens to me at Christmastime (is that a word?).  I get inspired, unfocused, scattered and I just want to listen to Christmas music, watch Christmas movies, read Christmas books the kids, eat and shop.  I want to do nothing but soak in the season and pluck little names off the trees in the mall and GIVE.

Literally.

My floors need to be vacuumed, my blog needs to be tended to and every tiny trash can in every bathroom is FULL.  There are crumbs on my floors and gifts still to be wrapped.  I will inevitably find myself up well past midnight Christmas Eve wondering what the heck I've been up to these last few weeks.

I always sit there, next to my pile of crumbs and unwrapped gifts, dumbfounded.  I know I was busy, but why isn't anything done? And didn't I start Christmas prep in early November?

Or maybe there is enough to do that all the extras like crumb removal and wrapping can wait.  I fall into my "only what is necessary" habits, leaving what can wait for last.  Christmas movies become necessary.  Dinner with the family jumps to the front of the line.  I bask in all the Christmas glory and wish for more than just a few weeks of this glorious holiday season.

Tonight, I baked up Rudolph Cupcakes for my daughter's class.  I packaged up little gifts for teachers and I watched the Grinch.  It was heavenly.

And yet the crumbs remain.  I guess they'll have to wait.  Maybe I can brush them onto the deck for Santa's Reindeer.  By then there should be plenty.

Happy weekend everyone.  Get that shopping done!

Hugs!

Chocolate Peppermint Stirring Spoons

I am one of the room moms for our twins' 5th grade class, and this Friday is their Christmas party.

My kids are lucky, they still get Christmas parties... I have talked to many friends, and their kids have "winter" parties.  I LOVE singing Christmas Carols and singing the kids all dressed in their Sunday best at their programs.

I am thankful my kids go to a Catholic school.

We are doing this cute craft I found on Pinterest

and having a hot cocoa bar!

My daughter and I made these cute Chocolate Peppermint Stir Spoons!

They couldn't be easier to make and so good in hot cocoa!!

Want to make your own cocoa mix?

Chocolate Peppermint Stirring Spoons

48 plastic spoons
6 candy canes crushed
2 cups chocolate chips
2 teaspoons crisco

Crush your candy canes.
Line cookie sheets with waxed paper. Rest spoons on edge of cookie sheet.
Melt chocolate chips in microwave for about 1 minute and then 30 second intervals until you can stir them smooth, add crisco and stir until incorporated.

**I used a glass 2 cup measuring cup ... worked great to pour the chocolate into the spoons!**

Pour chocolate into spoon well, and tap the spoon to make the chocolate pool evenly in the spoon.

Add crushed peppermints and place in the refrigerator to set up.

Swirl it through some hot cocoa and Relax....

Homemade Hot Cocoa Mix

I made a housewarming gift basket for my brother and his family last weekend, and it turned out super cute!
I'll blog about it AFTER the holidays ... but the cute basket included this homemade hot cocoa.

I searched Pinterest, and read different recipes, but found this one from a blog that I love called wonkywonderful.com   You have seen recipes from Nicole on my facebook page, she shares there every now and then, and her stuff is always AMAZING.

So hers it was!

rich and thick and stirred into hot milk ... no water here, friends!

Do you have a Tuesday Morning where you live?  I love going in that store, it's sort of like digging for buried treasure.  It's where I found this "Chalk it up" Glass jar.  I love how it looks like a barrel.

This is one of my favorite mugs, given to me by my dear friend, Traci.
(aint that the truth??)

Homemade Hot Cocoa Mix

1 cup cocoa
1 cup powdered sugar
1/2 cup instant coffee creamer
1/2 cup Ovaltine

Combine and store in an airtight container.

Add 3-4 Tablespoons to a an 8 ounce cup hot milk and stir.

Chocolate Mint Candy Cookies

These are my contribution to my cookie exchange this year.
I made a "test batch" about 2 weeks ago, and they lasted all of 10 minutes, I swear!!

My sister-in-law, Karen, used to make these every year.
They are my niece, Leah's favorite cookie.

You don't have to sprinkle the candy canes on them, but I thought it made them more festive!

Chocolate Mint Candy Cookies

3/4 cup butter
1 1/2 cups brown sugar
2 Tablespoons water
2 cups semi sweet chocolate chips
2 eggs
2 1/2 cups flour
1 1/4 teaspoons soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 packages Andes Mints
Crushed Peppermints or candy canes (optional)

In a saucepan over medium heat, cook sugar, butter and water, stirring occasionally until butter is melted.  Remove from heat and stir in the chocolate chips until melted. Let cool for about 10 minutes.

In your mixer, pour the chocolate batter.  Add and beat each egg one at a time.  Stir in flour, baking sod and salt.  Cover and refrigerate for at least one hour.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Grease cookie sheets or line with parchment paper.
Roll dough into walnut sized balls and place two inches apart.
Bake for 8-10 minutes.
DO NOT OVER BAKE.

Place one Andes Mint on top of each cookie, let sit for about a minute to let it get all melty.
Swirl with the back of a spoon.
Top with crushed peppermint if you desire.

The Bierhaus at Taman Sentosa, Johor Bahru

The-Bierhaus-Taman-Sentosa-Johor-Bahru

Last evening, I visited The Bierhaus German pub and restaurant at Taman Sentosa at the invitation of Raymond, one of the Directors.

The-Bierhaus-Taman-Sentosa-Johor-Bahru

I always loved German pubs and restaurants for their solid hearty food, good sloshing cold beer and jolly good cheer.

Stepping into The Bierhaus, we can feel straightway that this is the food and fun place in Johor Bahru.

The-Bierhaus-Johor-Bahru

The cosy bar is set around a large island. Every time I looked at that glowing bluish "ice berg" of drinks in the centre, I want to reach for a bottle and take a swig hehe :P

The-Bierhaus-Johor-Bahru

The bar is a good place to chill with friends or engage the friendly bar tenders about cocktails, beers, liquor or the latest soccer and other sports news.

The-Bierhaus-Taman-Sentosa-Johor-Bahru

Or, bond with friends over a friendly game of pool.

The-Bierhaus-Taman-Sentosa-Johor-Bahru

If you prefer outdoor dining, there is also the al fresco beer garden.

This is The Bierhaus' second outlet - the first is in Taman Johor Jaya and the third was just opened in Taman Sutera Utama.

Raymond said that The Bierhaus has always prided itself on the quality of it's food. Chef Kamal has experience in Western cuisine in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. The Bierhaus' Executive Chef Fabrizio is also the owner Chef of Ros Marino Italian, one of JB's top fine dining restaurants.

The-Bierhaus-Johor-Bahru

Our scrumptious dinner started with this cold cut meats and cheese platter with fresh bread and pickles (RM36++).

The-Bierhaus-Taman-Sentosa-Johor-Bahru

The savoury imported cold cuts and cheese, made us reached unconsciously for our beers and got our jolly evening to a great start :D

The-Bierhaus-Taman-Sentosa-Johor-Bahru

(I forgot to take a picture our over sized mugs of German Paulaner beer :P  Raymond told us that Paulaner is the best selling beer at The Bierhaus.)

The-Bierhaus-Johor-Bahru
Spaghetti Carbonara RM25++

Bierhaus' spaghetti carbonara was one of our favourite of the evening. The rich sauce, savoury bacon bits and el dente pasta were tossed with a soft boiled egg yolk giving it a delicious eggy touch which we liked.

German-Pork-Knuckle-Bierhaus-Johor-Bahru
The Bierhaus Classic Pork Knickle RM49++

The star of any German restaurant is, of course, their pork knuckle :P

Pork-Knuckles-Bierhaus-Johor- Bahru

At The Bierhaus, pork knuckles are made in a number of different styles. Today, we chose the classic crispy style served with tangy crunchy house made sauerkraut and mashed potato.

Crackly crispy, golden brown skin, soft fat, tender moist meat. The 1.4 kg pork knuckle was light on seasoning and was tasty without any porkiness.

The pork knuckle comes with house made brown, Thai, apple and a radish pickle dip. The pork knuckle already so good by itself - adding the dips made it even more interesting to the taste buds :D

French-Sausages-The-Bierhaus-Taman-Sentosa-Johor-Bahru

The popular grilled imported premium Italian pork sausage (RM48++) which is known for it's meaty and herbal flavours is a perfect pair with beers.

Japanese-Scallops-The-Bierhaus-Johor-Bahru

We love this grilled Japanese scallops wrapped in bacon and served with spicy mayonnaise. I love the blend of subtly different savouriness from seafood and pork.

I must highlight the spicy mayonnaise. The house blended smooth creamy dip has a slight spiciness that is surprising and delightful. When we finished the scallops, the waitress came to take away the empty plate but I kept the small dish of spicy mayonnaise. It's so good, I literary ate it on it's own.

I like The Bierhaus for it's good food, good range of drinks and cosy environment. No wonder, many people gather here regularly with friends and many milestones like birthdays are celebrated here.

The-Bierhaus-Johor-Bahru

Locating The Bierhaus is easy - it's at the end of Jalan Sutera (heading east) in the direction of Permas Jaya.

No Bake Christmas Desserts in 30 Minutes or Less

Christmas is a time of peace, love and joy.  We see loved ones and go to parties.  We spend time shopping and buying gifts.  There is a magic in the air that is missing the other eleven months of the year.  Usually December is gone in the blink of an eye because of all the activities and events that go along with the holiday season.

All the running, wrapping and shopping leaves little left in the engine for elaborate desserts.  I'm sharing a few of my favorite no bake desserts for classes and parties.  When you are short on time or just short on energy, these desserts still offer plenty of "wow" and not as much time in the kitchen.

"Bake" away!

Chocolate Dipped Anythings

The easiest, quickest "wow" dessert is anything dipped in chocolate.  Think pretzels, crackers, twizzlers, gummy bears and oreos.

What you need:

2 bags milk chocolate chips
anything "dippable"
wax paper
festive sprinkles

In a glass bowl, microwave two bags of chocolate (minus approx 1/4 cup chips).  Heat on high in 30-45 second intervals, stirring after each interval.  When chocolate stirs smooth, toss in 1/4 cup chips and stir until melted.  This will lower the temperature of the chocolate making it perfect for dipping.

Line a baking sheet with wax paper.  Dip your pretzels, oreos or whatever and place on wax paper.  If you're using pretzels, and feeling crafty make a wreath.  Sprinkle on some festive sugars and sprinkles and chill in the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes.  The chocolate will set, and you have a tray full of goodies in less than thirty minutes.

Christmas Krispy Treats

Everyone loves Krispy Treats.  Or at least everyone I know loves Krispy Treats.  They are easier on the hips and a cinch to make.

What you need:

5 cups rice cereal
1 bag mini marshmallows
3 tablespoons butter/margarine
red and green chocolate candies or sprinkles
greased 9x13 baking dish

Melt butter over low heat in heavy saucepan.  Add marshmallows and stir until smooth.  Remove from heat, add rice cereal.  Stir in candies or sprinkles.  Spread in greased 9x13 baking dish and place in fridge to set.  In twenty minutes, cut into squares and you're ready to rock.

Reindeer Oreos
I saw these on Pinterest, and they are adorable and simple.  Perfect for class parties or holiday gathering where there will be kids.

What you need:

1 package oreos
1 bag mini marshmallows
mini chocolate chips
broken mini pretzels
red chocolate candies
vanilla frosting

Using vanilla frosting, attach two mini marshmallows and two mini chocolate chips for eyes.  Attach reindeer antlers.  Add chocolate candies for nose.

Viola! Adorable edible reindeer!
