Kampung Chicken Rice at 旺角 Stall in Kee Kim Huat Kopitiam in Taman Sri Tebrau, Johor Bahru

 Chicken-Rice

We were having late supper a few months ago at Kee Kim Huat kopitiam and one of us ordered a small plate of kampung chicken rice from the 旺角 kampung chicken rice stall here. I immediately liked it as the chicken was tender, smooth and flavourful. I decided then that I would come back to try it again and write a post about it.

Chicken-Rice

旺角 Kampung Chicken Rice stall run by Ah Xiang is a branch of Buddy's chicken rice in Taman Pelangi. Whereas Buddy's sells farm chickens,  旺角 specialises in kampung chickens.

Chicken-Rice

The kampung chicken meat was tender, smooth and naturally sweet. Even the breast meat which is usually bland and fibrous was soft and flavourful.

Chicken-Rice

Whenever a chicken rice stall offers "glass chicken claws" I will order it :) The "glass chicken claws" at 旺角 were excellent - crunchy, and had nice mouth feel. The light savoury and slightly tangy sauce enhanced the taste of the "glass chicken claws".

Fried-Tofu

All of Buddy's outlets get their tofu from the same supplier. The tofu was firm and quite smooth. Ah Xiang is skillful in frying the tofu and his was the most nicely done tofu among Buddy's outlets that I have tried so far.

Chicken-Rice

We had a plate of beansprouts. It was nice and crunchy and was tasty with nice savoury sauce. But, these were the usual local taugeh and it was not as good that those plump, succulent and sweet taugeh we had in Ipoh.

Chicken-Rice

The rice was mildly flavoured with pandan leaves, ginger and chicken fat. It was not too oily nor greasly, not that "old style" some would say but I liked my chicken rice this way.

Chicken-Rice Chili

The spicy, mildy stinging chili sauce and mild ginger puree were nice and enhanced the enjoyment of the chicken.

Chicken-Rice

旺角 sells kampung chicken at RM38 a bird and RM19 for half. A set of chicken rice with soup  costs RM7.

Chicken-Rice

旺角 does not serve porridge despite what is stated on the stall front.

Chicken-Rice

旺角 Chicken Rice stall is certainly worth trying for its lovely kampung chicken.

I noticed at least one other kampung chicken stall just around the corner. I shall try that and other stalls, and compile a selection of JB's best chicken rice.
