Fried Fish Bee Hoon Soup @ Restoran Fei Long 肥龙鱼头餐饮室 in Taman Johor Jaya, Johor Bahru, Malaysia


After our delicious nasi lemak breakfast at Restoran JJ, I noticed that the restaurant two doors away was a hive of activity. Curious, we popped over to see what the excitement was all about. It was Restoran Fei Long 肥龙. I vaguely recalled it being discussed in a foodie forum and that it serves good fish head bee hoon soup.

At this point, some people just got up from their table, so we decided to sit down and give Fei Long a try. There were various fried fish/ fish head bee hoon and noodles dishes on the menu, and we picked the fried fish bee hoon.


Each RM6 bowl comes with three large pieces of fried fish laid on top of the soup and bee hoon.
 

Just one bite into Fei Long's fried fish and I realised that this was different. The sweet fried fish was firm yet tender and had that lovely bounciness that only fresh fish can have. The fried fish did not feel greasy at all.

 
This makes a great fish head bee hoon :)
 
There is really no secret behind Fei Long's best tasting fish. Fei Long proudly lets you see that they use only fresh fish, not frozen fish.
 

The soup was clear, tasty, sweet and had some body from the stock bones and fish used in making the soup.

The bee hoon complements the fried fish and soup well, though it was nothing out of the ordinary.
 

Before we underestimate the humble bee hoon, it did a great job of soaking up the extra spicy hot, tangy chili sauce. The tongue stung numb by the extra spicy chili was soothed by the relatively bland bee hoon and then pleasured by the sweet fish and soup. Quite an interesting and delicious taste experience.

 
Well, no wonder then that even though Fei Long is located in this quieter part of Taman Johor Jaya, it has such a healthy following of fans, including top billing Singapore Mediacorp artistes who occasionally eat here incognito on lazy weekend mornings. Remember you got this paparazzi tip from Johor Kaki :P

Food We Love - Pisang Goreng (Fried Bananas)

 
Pisang Goreng (fried banana) is a well loved, common street hawker snack in Johor.
 

Molten hot, banana flesh almost like sweet melted cheese wrapped in crispy, crunchy fried batter is a favourite tea time treat for many of us.
 

Chilling with friends at a pisang goreng stall, enjoying fried snacks with a cuppa of teh terik is a special kind of uniquely Malaysian bonding ritual.

Here are three pisang goreng stalls I love and I am sure that there are more, that I have yet to discover.
 

Pisang Mawar is arguably the most famous pisang goreng stall in Johor Bahru. Pisang Mawar is a cheerful place with constant streams of customers enjoying their tea here or bagging loads of goodies to take home.
 
 
Pisang Mawar has many Singaporean customers as it is located on a route convenient for Singaporean drivers to pick up bags of goodies on their way home.
 

Another famous Pisang Goreng stall, Sweet Banana has been selling their popular fried goodies from their push cart stall along Jalan Stulang Darat for many years before they recently relocated to their new premises at Stulang Walk.
 
 
Now customers can relax and enjoy the same Sweet Banana tasty fried goodies with comfortable seating and easy, ample free parking.
 

This pisang goreng stall in Taman Sri Skudai that does not really have a name, is a favourite place with residents who like to come here to take a break from the afternoon heat and catch up on the day's happenings in the neighbourhood.
 
 
It is not unusual for famous hawker stalls to have no name and yet everyone in the neighbourhood knows about them as it is the local landmark.

Goreng Pisang Mawar in Johor Bahru, Malaysia


Pisang Mawar is the most famous pisang goreng in JB. People may have different preferences on which is the tastiest or most popular pisang goreng, but for fame, Pisang Mawar is unmatched.

The thing that struck me about Pisang Mawar is the place is so happy and relaxed. Perhaps, it is the surroundings. Not far from the beach, up a grassy slope with a florist and Galeri Mawar as the backdrop, and easy parking. But most of all, everyone seemed so relaxed and happy here, chilling in the afternoon :)
 

The family that runs Pisang Mawar was so cheerful - that sets the tone for the whole place. I mean, this must be the most photographed pisang goreng stall in Johor, if not Malaysia, but they still obliged photographers warmly and graciously.
 
 
 
Pisang Mawar is famed for their pisang goreng. Crispy outside, soft and sweet inside. The batter was also not greasy. 
 

Remember to dip the pisang goreng in this spicy hot and savoury sauce. When combined with the sweet taste of the crunchy pisang goreng, it creates a very interesting mix of flavours and bite.

 
When enjoying my pisang goreng, I saw the lady pouring fresh, good quality, clear vegetable oil straight from the plastic bottle into the frying wok. No compromise with recycled oil here.
 

We love this curry puff

Besides their famous pisang goreng, Pisang Mawar also offers other tea time snacks like curry puffs, spring rolls, kuih muih, mee siam and nasi lemak. Pisang Mawar also served drinks and this is the only place that actually gave us a not-too-sweet teh tarik when we requested for "kurang manis" or less sweet. Thumbs up :)


Pisang Mawar's nasi lemak was good too. We were at Pisang Mawar in the afternoon, so by this time the nasi lemak was cold. Yet, the coconut fragrance still greeted us when we opened the old style banana leaf and old newspaper wrapping.

The sambal chili was a grainy, thick paste. Not overly spicy and not too sweet. This sambal chili is more like that from the old days, whereas nowadays, the more drippy, gravy-like and sweet kind seemed to be served in most places. Another thumbs up for Pisang Mawar.

Pisang Mawar is a must try for its fame, and personally, I like the food here too :)

Cinnamon Sugar Twists

I made these cinnamon sugar twists last Sunday.  I had just treated myself to my morning fix of Pinterest.  I left the computer inspired to bake something delicious, and sinfully Sunday morning good.

I went with cinnamon rolls twisted like breadsticks.

They were just what our Sunday morning ordered; cinnamon, sugar and carbohydrates.
2 3/4 cup all purpose flour, plus extra for rolling
1/3 cup sugar
1 packet active dry yeast
dash salt
4 Tbsp butter
1/3 cup whole milk
1/4 cup water
2 room temperature eggs
2 tsp vanilla

Filling:
1 cup sugar
 2 Tbsp cinnamon
4 Tbsp butter, melted

In large bowl, mix 2 cups flour (save 3/4 for later) next 3 ingredients.  Set aside.

In small saucepan, melt butter and milk.  Remove from heat and add water and vanilla. Cool 5 minutes.

Add milk mixture to dry mixture, mix well.  Whisk together eggs and add to batter.  Continue mixing and add 3/4 cup flour.  Mixture will be sticky.
Place dough in a medium sized greased bowl, and turn to coat.  Cover with plastic wrap and let dough rise in a warm place for 45 minutes, until it doubles in size.

Knead dough and add a few tablespoons flour, cover and let rise 10 more minutes.

In a small bowl, mix cinnamon and sugar for filling.  

On a clean, dry, nonstick surface, roll out dough.  Using a pizza cutter, make long strips, about 8" long and 2" wide.  Brush each strip with melted butter, and generously sprinkle with filling.  Twist strips tightly, be careful to keep cinnamon sugar inside.
Sprinkle tops with remaining filling, and place on baking sheet.
Bake at 350 for 10-15 minutes.  Let cool 5 minutes, and enjoy while warm!

Nasi Padang JJ in Taman Johor Jaya, Johor Bahru, Malaysia

I have always been fascinated by nasi padang stalls because of the sheer variety of flavours and colours to taste and feast upon with the eyes.

I was food spotting in Johor Jaya and was drawn to Nasi Padang JJ as I was impressed with their range of food. Nasi Padang JJ is like a mini one-shop Ramadhan bazaar, everyday!

 
 
And, behind all that sumptuous food is just Man, his wife Kak Ami, and a helper in the kitchen. Man is the brother of, wait for this, Man of Kak Ina (Restoran Causeway) fame. The two brothers have the same nickname and both run among JB's most loved nasi padang stalls. One Man runs Restoran Causeway with his wife Kak Ina, and this Man, runs Nasi Padang JJ with his wife, Kak Ami.
 

In the kitchen, Man was doing the day's cooking with just one lady helper.
 

In the morning between 7:00am to 9:30am, Nasi Padang JJ sells nasi lemak. Each nasi lemak packed in these pointy cone packets costs RM1.50.
 

Kak Ami packs the nasi lemak with banana leaves and old newspaper at the shop every morning, in the old charming way.
 

When we unwrapped the nasi lemak, it was still warm inside and the coconut aroma escaped to greet our noses.

For lunch, I tried Nasi Padang JJ's beef rendang and squid stuffed with mashed tofu.
 

Nasi Padang JJ's authentic Padang style the beef rendang was tender, juicy and fragrant inside while the caramelised outside was stiffer. The gelatinous tendons and fats were smooth, soft and jelly like, adding interesting texture to the bite. 
 

The good sized squid was stuffed with mashed tofu and egg. This was the first time I had this interesting fusion dish. The spicy chewy squid combined well with the softer, blander tofu and egg.

Kak Ami has an artistic eye and she takes a lot of pride in the presentation of her food. Let's watch the parade of just a small sampling of the food at Nasi Padang JJ.

Chicken rendang - not very photogenic but I bumped into the chef of a famous Chinese restaurant getting a packet of Nasi Padang JJ's for take away (bungkus). Shan't mention which Chinese restaurant but the chef told me that I got to try JJ's chicken rendang because it is special. So, next time :)
